So my netbook died on me after 2 years....

...and i am in dire need of a laptop.
I was thinking of working the whole summer and buying a Macbook Pro(costs 1080 euros for me here since i am a student here).

But today i suddenly came across this:

Lenovo IBM G550:

Pentium Dual-Core T4300 2x 2.10GHz
• 2048MB
• 250GB
• DVD+/-RW DL
• Intel GMA X4500HD (IGP) max.384MB shared memory
• 3x USB 2.0/LAN/WLAN 802.11bgn
• Webcam (0.3 Megapixel)
• 15.6" WXGA glare LED TFT (1366x768)
• FreeDOS
• Li-Ionen-Akku (6 Zellen)
• 2.70kg

The whole thing costs 368 euros!!!!

I don't know, i have to work my ass off in summer if i wanna buy a Macbook pro but this thing seems to be sufficient for my needs IF it doesn't die on me in another 2 years!
I don't guys, i am little n00blet and i wouldn't mind if you guys would decide for me. I don't to play games,. I just need this shit for Java programming and such stuff.

Your opinion?

EDIT: Fuck acer aspire one...i thought this shit would last a bit longer.

EDIT 2: SHIT!! Wrong forum...sorry guys! move please!

Even if it dies on you in 2 years - that's slightly more than 15 euros a month for the use of a laptop.

Pretty good deal if you ask me.

I heard the G-Series is pretty solid. Sounds like a good deal to me. IBM is ofc not IBM anymore, but Lenovo has some quality stuff. dell > lenovo > * > asus > acer imo

Fuck the G-Series... it does not even come close to a real Thinkpad.

I would go for an refurbished Thinkpad T-Series. (Try to get a refurbushed Thinkpad R400 with LED and wgxa+ Display... those are awesome notebooks with a great cost-benefit ratio)

Bullshit,

Lenovo sells consumer notebooks (G-,SL-,L-Series)... these are very different in terms of quality, engineering and service from their businessnotebooks (T- and R-Series). The T-Series remains one of the finest notebook series avaible on the market. Just look at the T400s/T410s a durable 14'' notebook that weigths as much as a 11'' netbook (1,6kg!) and has a great performance. These notebooks have the same quality as the IBM models.

Or check out this "baby":

@Astiaks, how much money do you want to spend? What do you want to do with your Notebook?

If money is not a problem: T400 (with a switchable dedicated graphic card), T410 (with integrated graphics) or T410 (switchable)

If you want a budget notebook: SL510

Budget Gamer: R522 Ahadi... I have seen some for 500€ around

omfg that ad is so wrong, yet so right for the geeks it's aimed at.

anyhow, I just bought some Thinkpad T510i laptops for our codemonkeys. the size is of course not what you're looking for, but general quality etc should cary over to other Lenovo products in the same line. I'll let you know how that pans out.

Thanks for the info guys. Well, i am currently having my eye on a ThinkPad L510:
Lenovo_Thinkpad_l510.jpg

# Prozessor: T6570
# Takt: 2,1 GHz
# HD: 500 GB (5400 rpm)
# RAM: 4 GB (2 x 2 GB DDR3)
# Display: 15,6" HD 1366x768 AntiGlare LED
# GPU: Intel 4500MHD
# WWAN: -
# Battery: 6 Zellen Akku
# Drive: DVD-writer
# Kamera: integriert/-
# Weight: 2,56 kg (inkl. Battery)
# Garantie: 3 years Bring In

It costs 670 without a OS for students.

btw, are DELL notebooks ny good?

I would not recommend bying an L-Series... It's a bad deal.

If you want to code you'll want to have as much information displayed on the screen as possible hence an wxga+ or wsxga+ resolution.

Which country are you from? Can you link me the page with your student notebook offers?

Here are some other good notebooks besides Thinkpads:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Vostro-3500-Notebook.30323.0.html

Btw. not all all Acers are bad (but most of them!) the Acer Timeline X Travelmate Series is not that bad...

It's a simple question, really: what do you WANT and what do you NEED?

I'd go with the NEED option on this one, seeing as how your budget is limited.

The Macbook is a fine computer. However I would upgrade the warrenty to 3 years... 1 year warranty for such an expensive piece of equipment is a joke.

2 other reasons you might want to consider:

1) The MBP has a glossy display... :x
2) You won't be able to repair much by yourself (unlike a Thinkpad you won't be able to screw anything open, replace, clean, modifiy etc.)

Still, if you want to code by a notebook with a 1440x900 or 1680x1050 resolution. You will have much more fun with it.

Actually if you want to spend so much money and maximize the portability this is a much better option (ubook):

ThinkPad X201s

* Prozessor: Intel Core i7-620LM
* Takt: 2,0 GHz
* HD: 500 GB (7200 rpm)
* RAM:4 GB (2 x 2 GB DDR3)
* Display: 12,1" WXGA+ (1440x900) LED
* Graphik: Intel GMA HD (QM57)
* WWAN: nicht verfügbar
* Batterie: 9 Zellen Akku
* Laufwerk: -
* Kamera: nein
* Gewicht: 1,38 kg (inkl. Akku)
* Garantie: 3 Jahre vor Ort
* Preis mit Windows*: € 1.160,-
* Preis ohne Betriebssystem: € 1.080,-

Do not underestimate 3 years of full support with a technician comming to your home to repair your piece of hardware.

@iii: That's actually really good and i do get your point. but the thing is that i want the laptop to have a DVD Drive.
I still can't believe that the MBP has only 1 year warranty!

Well, you know what the british say? "I am not rich enough to buy something cheap!"

Last time i spent 400 euros on a Acer aspire one and it gave me nothing but 2 years of trouble!

Ok Astiaks, a year ago I would have suggested that you by a Thinkpad R400 for 765€ ... 9cell battery, wxga+ LED Display, switchable graphics, 3 years of warranty.

Well this model is sold out.

So if you really want a Thinkpad (and I recommend this brand to everyone) now here are your options:

1.

http://www.studentnotebook.at/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T410/aID/296/

This model offers you a great balance between portability, size, and performance.

If you want to play games you might want to reconsider this choice. The integrated graphics solution isn't that powerful :? However you will be rewarded with a longer battery life 5-6 hours of "real"* working and a lower noise/ heat.

*Display 2/3 of brightness, wlan on, surfing, excel, skype, firefox, word, pdf, some flash etc.

2.

If you want to have more game performance:

Ubook
ThinkPad T410

* Prozessor: Intel Core i5-540M
* Takt: 2,52 GHz
* HD: 500 GB (7200 rpm)
* RAM: 4 GB (2 x 2 GB DDR3)
* Display: 14,1" WXGA+ 1440x900 LED
* Graphik: NVIDIA NVS 3100m
* WWAN: optional
* Batterie: 9 Zellen Akku
* Laufwerk: DVD-Brenner
* Kamera: integriert
* Gewicht: 2,43 kg (inkl. Akku)
* Garantie: 3 Jahre vor Ort
* Preis mit Windows*: € 1.150,-
* Preis ohne Betriebssystem: € 1.070,-

The 3100m isn't that great but will give you 4 times more performance than the Intel 4500. You will be able to play most new games at medium-low settings. Notebooks aren't really suited for gaming. The drawback: considerable lower battery life 3-4 hours of "real" working (although the 9cell battery might add some time compared to the standard 6 cell batteries from the studenbook offers).

3.

Lenovo's current premium workhorse is the:

ThinkPad T410s

* Prozessor: Intel Core i5-520M
* Takt: 2,40 GHz
* HD Variante1: 250 GB (5400 rpm)
* HD Variante2: 128GB SSD
* RAM: 4 GB (2 x 2 GB DDR3)
* Display: 14,1" WXGA+ 1440x900 LED
* Graphik: Intel GMA HD (QM57)
* WWAN: optional
* Batterie: 6 Zellen Akku
* Laufwerk: DVD-Brenner
* Kamera: integriert
* Gewicht: 1,79 kg (inkl. Akku)
* Garantie: 3 Jahre vor Ort
* Preis Variante 1 mit Windows*: € 1.220,-
* Preis Variante 2 mit Windows*: € 1.350,-
* Preis Variante 1 ohne Betriebssystem: € 1.140,-
* Preis Variante 2 ohne Betriebssystem: € 1.270,-

It offers nearly the same performance as the first one but this baby was even more optimized in weight, size and portability. Its much thinner and weights only 1,7kg! thats the weight of an average netbook. However its also the most expensive modell... so I would only consider it an option as a real counteroffer to a Macbook Pro with 3 years of warranty.

4.

If portability is not "that" important you should consider this R500

Its display has a reallly good contrast and an awesome resolution (my r61i has the same... I would miss every pixel if I had to use a lower resolution on a 15'' screen).

The price is also quite good if you consider the 3 year warranty...

5. If you don't mind bying a used Thinkpad, check out this offer:
http://www.thinkpad-forum.de/marktp...-t400-led-wsxga-ati-grafik-2gb-ram-320gb-hdd/

or
http://www.nbwn.de/
http://www.nbwn.de/lenovo-thinkpad/thinkpad-t-serie/thinkpad-t400.html

As you see Thinkpads do not lose much in value, so you will be able to sell it after 3-4 yours without many problems... even if you only sell it as spare parts!

Thanks for the info iii.

The ThinkPad T410s seems to be what i am looking for since i don't really want to play with the laptop.
I am gonna go to the Macbook shop today and ask them how much warrranty they have with their laptops. then i am gonna decide.

How about this privative baby…it might be a touch difficult playing a game on that screen... :roll:

I have almost decided which laptop to buy:

-Intel® Core™ i3-370M Processor (2.40 GHz)
-German Original Windows® 7 Home Premium (32Bit OS) with Recovery DVD
-3072MB (1x2048 + 1x1024) 1333MHz DDR3
-13.3" 34 cm Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED Anti-Glare
-320GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
-8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
-Graphics : Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator HD
-3Yr ProSupport for End Users and Next Business Day On-Site Service

I really wanted to buy a MacBook Pro but it costs something like 1080,00 € and has only 1 year Warranty. If i want to extend that to 3 years i have to pay something like 220,00 € !!! No Thanks!!!
The Dell Laptop costs only 654,00 €, has 3 Years Warranty and it is really sufficient to my needs.

Good choice!

If you order a DELL do it via phone!

You can always bargain a bit, a friend of mine managed to bargain a vostro from 850€ to 700... so try your luck :)

My sister had some luck: the supermarket chain "Carrefour" is closing down a whole lot of its stores because of financial difficulties and they are just throwing stuff out at huge discounts. She got herself a nice HP Notebook (G72-130SB), intel Core i3-330, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB, ATI HD5430 (512MB), Windows 7 Home Premium with a nice 17,3" led screen for a measly €350. I was jealous for just a moment. She got it at -50%, for Christ's sake.

I still work with xp, goddamnit.
