So NMA I have had a job offer, need your "sage" advice.

Muff

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
OK Long story short I have been given a job offer, fixed 9 month job offer very decent money;

However, it's in the Philippines now I am no stranger to working away from home inside Europe for a day, week month / months so working away from home leaves little mystery for me. However it is not like I can go home in a few hours or have friends come out and have a mini break, go home on a Friday for the weekend etc, so it would be a bit of a break from the normal in that respect. I am however wondering if any NMA folks have experience with the Philippines or Asia in general especially as a foreign worker in a skilled job, not to mention whats the work culture like? I know the culture in the Philippines is a odd mix of Asian, Spanish and American etc but if any one could share their experiences I would greatly appreciate it.

Go for it. You have nothing to fear, except fear itself. Stick to the main cities until you have the right friends to take you around the more obscure locations, local knowledge is important. Find a Filipino girlfriend, or boyfriend (which ever way you swing), learn a few words in the local languages, and just enjoy the adventure.

My friend was there for couple of weeks and said the people were quite friendly and polite overall and he did wonder around often alone. He did almost get robbed once though, he took a taxi to the country side while being drunk. Luckily hes pretty good with his mouth and came prepared with some candy and booze to give out so he didnt really lose anything.

Not a lot to fear in the Philippines if you stick to the well known parts and don't go play mr rich guy in some of the desolated areas.

I'd say go for it if the job is interesting, pays well & everything is properly organized. It'll be a nice life experience.

Thanks guy's I don't have to make my mind up for a little while longer yet, so I am still open to views. It's just such a big decision to make I don't want to rush into it.
