So, the Duke Nukem Forever demo is out...

Are you sure about that? Because I am pretty sure that I saw the ego bar and such already in the videos that leaked when the 3D Realms drama started.

Uh, Gearbox have been working on this game long enough that it is theirs. They might have some of the original design, story elements, graphics etc. left over but I have to imagine that they rebuilt most of the game from scratch.

Nope. The story as told is that more of 3/4 of the game was already finished and Gearbox just completed it.

And the two-weapon limit was already there during the 3D Realms period.

Just played it and thought it was clunky as fuck, and dare I say it, unfinished.

Maybe it's because the levels are taken out of context but the game felt very bland. I hope this demo is an old build because it doesn't even feel like a proper game. The enemies don't react to being shot at all. The AI is retarded. The zoom is plain odd. The levels are empty. The action is confusing. The humor is hit and miss.

it also wastes a lot of time. I feel like DN3D was about action first and humor a very close second. Here, it feels like the humor is given priority and the action is in the background but then again, this demo is really short so who knows.

Like everyone said already, the two weapon limit sucks and makes no sense. I didn't think that I would mind it but it actually is very annoying and pointless. In something like Halo, I totally get it. You have your bullet weapons and your plasma weapons and you got types of enemies. DNF simply limits your weapons for no good reason. I got the long range weapon and the shotgun. They both do what needs to be done so why the fuck would I pick up something like a shrink ray instead of one of them?

Having said all that, I enjoyed the feel of the stadium fight, even though it was very simple and easy. I loved the pace and the feel there. I will be very interested in reviews for this one.

if found this on another forum, it gives you the possibility to explore a little more of the first level:

"As soon as you step away from the urinal at the beginning, type "DNCLIP" to turn on noclip, face down, and move down through the floor. You'll immediately see a piece of cityscape way below you. Continue heading down for a few minutes, and eventually you'll find yourself floating above a Vegas style strip. As you keep going down, down, down, eventually you're going to see a gray wall, with some helicopters and jets floating in nothingness. (By this point you're clearly a few hundred feet above the city, with tall buildings and the Fellatio club nearby.) In this wall, between two golden statues, is a window. Pass through it to get into Duke's room, the one where the Holsom twins are at the end of the first demo level. Things are interactive in here.

I'll spoil the rest for those who want to look around by themselves.

You can play pool and turn a bunch of lights on and off. If you turn around the window will show a view of the area with a big alien spaceship above it. Walking across a certain area of the room will trigger the helicopters and planes for a flyby of the window. The TV in the room with the girls is going to be cycling through some channels - a news break with headlines scrolling at the bottom, a Holsom twins music video.

One fun spot is the bathroom, where you can walk in and admire yourself in a mirror, and get several lines of dialogue from Duke about how awesome he is. There's also a phone on the wall by the toilet, where somebody left a message.

The Holsom twins are stuck on their knees in front of the couch in the TV room, waiting for you to trigger the end of your boss fight. You can see the controller floating in midair. Turning off one of the light switches in the suite, however, will actually activate the twins, where they'll giggle about being scared of the dark or something similar. Afterwards, walking up to them will trigger some dialogue. Walking out of the room and down the hall, you can see a hallway with pictures of Duke doing awesome things, and then an elevator. Going into the elevator and using the buttons (guess what number floor Duke lives on) will send the elevator down, save a checkpoint and attempt to load the next area. Since it's just a demo, and the data isn't there, you'll just get a blank screen."

Look up the leaked 2009 videos when 3d Realms was still developing DNF. There was no 2 weapon limit.

I remember reading about the two weapons limit in the 3DR forum when they were still developing it, but...

He never switches between more than two weapons. Also look the last video around the 2:40 mark, the "hold button for [weapon]" appears at the bottom of the screen.

It's interesting that killing enemies restores your Ego in the first video.

Yeah, they added that stuff extremely late. Around the time 3d Realms went under and Tryptich formed. Many of the guys at Gearbox know this thing is going to bomb.

Also, people keep saying the demo is an "old build" despite there being evidence within the demo's own files it was compiled on June 1st 2011.

I've read the demo is based on a 8 to 9 month old build of the game (From PAX?), so hopefully the finished product will be more polished.

Can't really believe that. Why should they release an unfinished 8 or 9 months old build as a demo. It's pretty obvious that this will not make the players happy.

I am always skeptical about this too but it could actually be the case here. I'm sure some tweaking was done on June 1st, as Mad Max said but it may still be the old PAX build.

For one, it explains why they would not release the demo to everyone.

Two, seeing how it got delayed a couple of weeks, I would think that Gearbox has been crunching away, with no time to spend on a new demo.

They could have tweaked the old demo a bit and let people have it, since they promised it. After the game launches. they will probably release another demo to the general public. At least, I freaking hope so because the demo feels like an alpha build.

They're releasing the same demo to the rest of the world in a few days. At least that's according to Gearbox. The same guys (Randy Pitchford) also said the FAC demo wouldn't be what was shown at PAX last year and the team has been busting their asses to get it out. So take everything they say with a grain of salt. Pitchford is one of the biggest bullshit artists in the industry.

The only thing that makes sense is this demo is exactly how the game will turn out.

Also, proof there was no 2-weapon limit:

True, but that interview was made in June 2008. By the time 3DR went under, more than a year later, they already switched to the 2-weapon style (WHY?). They switched very late, but it was already 3DR that made the change.

Yes, I know that and stated it above. But since Gearbox took the reigns at the end of 2009/early 2010 they have to own up to the horrible design decisions in the final game.

More like mid-2010 as far as I know, but yeah, they were probably in time to reinstate the no-weapon-limit style if they wanted.

painless, those classic duke statements do not sound like the sound bytes from the duke 3d game.

its disappointing. the voice sounds a little off.

Day 1 DLC...

"Duke Nukem Forever will reportedly receive at least three packs of downloadable content, bringing new weapons, maps and modes - including karaoke. "

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-03-duke-nukem-forever-dlc-detailed

That article is flawed.

How can there be an achievement for Pregnator bombs in the base game if they're going to be a DLC weapon?

Yes, I looked up the achievement list, I wanted to see how many weapons were in the game (since every FPS ever has 'kill X enemies with x weapon' achievements).
