So who died... :(

welsh

Junkmaster
Or, what famous person died in the past year that you liked.

I know, this is morbid. But fuck it, every newspaper is doing it, so what the fuck.

For me, two come to mind-

Richard Pryor and Jack Anderson.

A nice bit here from Salon for Richard Pryor.

Also http://www.richardpryor.com where you can read-
"I ain't dead yet Mutha fucka" - his history.
And some nice MP3 clips.

Most of you probably never heard of Jack Anderson, as he hasn't been a big name for the past ten years-

Jack Anderson was a newspaper man who did investigative journalism before Woodward and Burnstein. He was the guy who used to peer through J. Edgar Hoover's trash for stories- and was on Hoover's shitlist. G. Gordon Liddy was suppose to assassinate him because of the problems he was causing for the Nixon administration. I read his column when I was young- remember the story about Pakistan stealing nuclear weapon parts from the US- and at one time considered being a journalist because of him.

Anderson began his newspaper career as a 12-year-old writing about scouting activity and community fairs in the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah. His first investigative story exposed unlawful polygamy in his church. He was as a civilian war correspondent during World War II and later, while in the Army, wrote for the military paper Stars and Stripes.

After he went to work with Pearson, the team took on communist-hunting Sen. Joseph McCarthy, exposed Connecticut Sen. Thomas Dodd's misuse of campaign money, and revealed the CIA's attempt to use the Mafia to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Let's not forget Arthur Miller too.

Oh and the Pope (I admit I didn't care for his conservative politics but he was a pretty cool Pope and he wore the hat well).

Someone mention Hunter Thompson?

Hunter Thompson and Richard Pryor are the only two that come to mind, though they were both pretty old so neither came as a shock.

The only 'celebrity' death that ever reallt affected me was Phil Hartman. God, that guy was such a comedic genius, and the way he died was so senseless and horrible that I actually felt depressed when I heard and my eyes watered up a little. I still get sad whenever I think about it.

Hunter S. Thompson had a good death, he died pretty much the way he lived; on his own terms.

Richard Pryor, on the other hand, deserved better.

Also, I recently heard John Spencer died, it's a shame, he was great in West Wing.

Luther Vandross. The man was a legend in his own right and put out some amazing tunes. He'd had a nasty stroke last year I believe and's been battling some illnesses for a ways now but it still saddens me. I've always loved his stuff.

Luther died? Shit. I had heard something about Luther on the news but didn't realize it was an obit. That blows.

I remember Spencer from LA Law and Presumed Innocent.

pryor and spencer were the 2 saddest deaths.

spencer was fucking awesome.

i remember seeing him in wargames and he rocked the house in west wing plus all the other little movies he was in.

John Lennon.

Oh, wait, this isn't 1980.

In that case, the famous person whose death saddened me the most is Pope John Paul II. I know, I know, you will say he isn't a celebrity. But think about it - if organized religion isn't the most perfect form of showbusiness ever, I don't know what is.

So yeah, John Paul II.

Meh, his shows are rigged, the audiences are packed with ringers who 'oooh' and 'aaah' on demand. I mean, come on, the guy had terrible stage prescence, no charisma, horrible timing and delivery, not to mention the constant stuttering and pauses. I don't know how he became such a popular performer.

Alash Daudov is dead. I would have liked to have killed him.

Same with Aslan Maskhadov. Two big missed opportunites on that part.

And we cannot forget the "Accidental" death of one of the biggest proponents of Genocide in South Ossetia, Zurab Zhvania. Lots of people liked him.

I didn't.

But wait, this thread is about famous people we LIKED who died?

Magomed Omarov, who I knew personally. His death went mostly unmentioned in most news, but he will be missed. An honest policeman in Russia is very hard to find.

Yet he managed to have a 800 000+ audience at times.

The minute of his death, all of Warsaw's sirens wailed. Watched people flock to their balconies, as I was out in the street drinking with some friends, all the pubs closed because of the Pope's final hours approaching.

Spent all the night drinking, landed in a friend's house on a matress with a cute Iberistics student, and the sound of sirens jerked me up at noon. My first reaction was "DUCK AND COVER!", I yanked the pillow under my head, leapt out of the matress and rolled under my friends' desk, to the surprise of everyone in the room.

Two seconds later, I realized it was the city's mourning.

You are confusing the Pope with a Bush "town hall" meeting. The pope rocked the house. Bush needs good special effects.

For those missing Richard Pryor- the MP3's on the webpage above are pretty fucking funny.

Lauren- this violent streak isn't healthy. Try decaf.

You actually met him? How was he? Mind you if he hadn`t been shot i would probably never heard of him, still he seems like an interesting character.

I'd say Dimebag Darrel Abbot, but he was killed on December 8th 2004.

Besides that, no one that I am going to miss actually died in 2005.

Pat Morita, actor best known for The Karate Kid, died November 24 at the age of 73.
Don Adams, actor best known as Maxwell Smart, died September 25 at the age of 82.
Bob Denver, actor best known as Gilligan, died September 2 at the age of 70.
James Doohan, actor best known as Scotty on Star Trek, died July 20 at the age of 85.

and the best death of the year?

Johnnie Cochran, lawyer best known for his work on the O.J. defense, died March 29 at the age of 67.

George Best.

He might've been a waste of a good liver, but damn if he wasn't the best football player of his day.

Yes, the pope had horrible technique, there are some far better shredders out there.

Agreed. I have to admit though, I do like some of his stuff from the Rat Pack days.
