Some annoyances I want answers to...

Stone-D

First time out of the vault
... are listed below. If you've got any good answers, I want to know!

1) What's the big whoop about XML for data storage? What's wrong with a friggin' text file? Or ye olde INI files?

2) At what point does a given piece of software become 'Enterprise Level'? Is that when all previously useful functions are reduced to a single "CLICK ME!" button for the clueless secretary types out there?

3) Why is the Crocodile Hunter not in a mental institution?

4) Is there a decent defragmenter for NTFS yet? What do I mean by 'decent'? I mean with features similar or better than SpeedDisk for FAT32/9x - dictate where files go, what files are 'unmovable' etc. I won't go near NTFS until I find a defragger with these abilities. I currently defrag my NT server via a minimal 9x installation use SpeedDisk.

5) Who was the brainiac that first decided that, immediately prior to and after an advert break, the viewer should be informed that they "... are watching channel NTI!!!"? I mean, come on!

6) Ditto for "You are watching, Star Trek : Voyager!" No... shit, I thought I was watching 'Ancient Rotting Corpses : Disected' on Discovery!!! No wonder it didn't make sense.

7) Last in the TV related questions, why do channels really enjoy advertising THEMSELVES ON THEIR OWN CHANNEL? Par example - Fox News. God that ditty is SOOOOOO ANNOYING.

8) Who does http://goatse.cx belong to?

9) It is now 2003. Computer technology is improving exponentially, yet - no matter what the operating system - if your CD drive suffers a heart attack during a read operation, your entire system will choke. WHY?!

10) Who actually uses the 'Sleep', 'Wake up' or 'Power' buttons on their keyboards? Me, I use Nothing, Space and Ye Olde Power Switche, in that order.

I think you're on the wrong forum...

1) XML files can store everything, from pictures to APIs. Text files can store...text. XML is ideal for web documents because it offers greater capabilities than HTML and is more simple to use than SGML. I'm sounding like an advertisement. But XML really has its advantages... I think...

2) No idea. Did you see the Windows XP installation disk booklet. I quote: "Get ready for a whole new experience. Microsoft XP Home Edition has a fresh, new look and it's easier than ever to use. This book explains how to get Windows XP set up and where to turn for help, so you can enjoy the most intuitive Windows operating system yet. Let's get started!" All of this is written in cheerful green and blue. Sounds like an ad for the new Teletubbies game...

3) Because even mental institutions have certain standards.

4) No, and I don't see why one would need all those features. NTFS rocks!

5) That's because many people have damaged short-term memory. If one of them happened to forget what channel he was watching, he would be able to sue the TV company for millions of dollars.

6) See 5)

7) It's a paradox. TV company can't advertise itself on another company's channel, because they are each other's competition. But capitalist doctrine says advertising is everything, so they have no choice but to advertise themselves on their own channels.

8) That's what FBI, NSA, CIA, Interpol, DEA, MI5, MI6, MI7, KGB, STASI and Mossad have been trying to find out...

9) I imagine it has something to do with inane way Windows handles IRQs and IDE channels. Maybe Serial ATA will finally solve this problem?

10) Nobody. The main reason they exist is to mess up the keyboards so that important keys like space and return are smaller. That way, the person who types is less efficient, more likely to furiously bang the keyboard with his fist and therefore likely to purchase new keyboard often. It's basically a conspiracy.

For that matter, does anyone use the goddamn Windows keys? My old keyboard was among my most prized possessions, not only for the sentimental value of being the last remnant of my first PC, but also for the fact that it only had Alts, Ctrls, and a looooong spacebar at the bottom.

Unfortunately it was killed by a deadly acid rain of cola earlier this year, and I was forced to get a new keyboard. And I couldn't find any without those damn Windows keys!!

So I opted instead for the one with the most colourful tacky shit that won't work without installing special drivers. :D

I use the windows key. Not so much to bring up the menu, but for minimizing and other shortcuts.

I never use Windows keys. I hate most of the keyboards out there except for one - Keytronic. It has fairly large keys, it's good quality and available in white and black. It has those evil Windows keys, but they don't get in the way so much.

Right now I'm typing on a BTC keyboard, which is cramped and uncomfortable, but it's silver so it goes well with my monitor and housing... :)
