Some Van Buren questions

I don't know if this should go to Fallout 3 or to general Fallout discussion, but anyway:

Does anyone have any idea as to why J.E. Sawyer's New Canaan was changed into Jericho (there are two separate design docs)? The original version was much better, IMHO. The Jericho design doc contained only some elements of the original New Canaan design. Was it changed after J.E. left?

Also, what's the deal with Los Alamos? The Reservation design doc says that the Reservation is Los Alamos, while the Mesa Verde one says that the people there are descendants of a group of scientists and soldiers based at the atomic laboratory at Los Alamos. It's either one or the other, since in Reservation, the people were underground and yet the radiation changed them to ghouls anyway, so probably no one survived on the surface.

Also, does design doc 13 exist? Are there no docs for Grand Canyon, Fort Abandon and Circle Junction? And does anyone know more about the Robot City than this?

I think General Discussion would be better, since Van Buren is DEAD DEAD DEAD as Fallout 3 ;)

Moved.

Yes, it is dead, but I'm documenting Van Buren stuff in the Vault anyway, just as we document FOT and FOBOS stuff, even though it isn't canon.

No Van Buren scholars around? Weird :).

Another one: Why was the number of the Twin Mothers vault changed from 31 (in old NMA forum leaks by kumquatq3) to 29 (in the actual design doc)? According to the Fallout Bible, Vault 29 was Harold's Vault, and if he were originally from Twin Mothers, he would probably recognize the place and Diana. Also, according to the Fallout Bible, no one in this Vault was over the age of 15 when they entered, while in the design docs there were some adults, but they were old and they quickly died.

Experts?

Well, you're asking stuff not readily available even to scholars of VB. The only people that'd know would be the devs, and maybe kumquat and Briosa.

Well, the devs do appear at NMA from time to time. As do kumquat and Briosa :).

As for one of the initial questions, I got an answer from J.E. Sawyer regarding Los Alamos.

The people at Mesa Verde are the descendents of people who left Los Alamos (maybe they had radiation suits?). The ghouls at the Reservation were people who stayed. There are some inconsistencies in the design docs, but they would probably be straightened in the final game.

Probably not, given the horribly short development cycles Interplay kept setting out.

I doubt they'd mention all the backstory from the design docs in the actual game anyway. How I'd love to get my hands on more old Fallout 1 design docs with all the backstory we have only bits of...

THAT would be a real treasure.

Ditto.

Fallout's early concept art is funny in its simplicity. I think I have a few scavenged .jpeg's on my old computer, somewhere...

IMO, vaults should have looked like that, there too clean in the game. Arent these supposed to be inhabited by 1000 people for 80 years? Cleaning robots arent that efficient.

Vault 13 would look that good, considering how long it was set to be inhabited.

Vault 8 was no longer used and kept clean quite easily, I suppose.

Vault 12, 15 and the LA Vault were all not in a good shape. So I don't see what you're harping on.

I had some questions about Van Buren, since I plan on salvaging as much as I can from it for Fallout PnP, as I'm sure some people here have.

I'm aware I'll have to do 99 percent of the work for it, but there are some general big-picture things I'm not entirely clear on as to the plotting of Van Buren that I want to get right.

Is the virus the PC is affected with spreadable to people and communities he visits, to what degree is it communicable, and is it meant to manifest itself in said communities during the game? In other words, Is the PC supposed to be able to kill off cities inadvertantly? Does the PC feel the ill effects of the plague, or is he only a primary carrier?

What exactly is Presper's master plan? Is he using both the plague and nuclear ballistics to wipe out post-nuclear civ? How does ZAX and ULYSSES figure into this? How are PCs supposed to thwart this maniac?

I'm aware that answers may not be readily available, but on the off chance that somebody knows details that aren't in the wikis and on the forums, I'm asking. Any answers provided would be appreciated. Thanks.
