Rock, Gellar, Scott Tell Tales
For Darko director.

April 21, 2005 - Donnie Darko filmmaker Richard Kelly's Darko Entertainment and Cherry Road Films announced today that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Seann William Scott will join Sarah Michelle Gellar in Kelly's forthcoming sci-fi thriller Southland Tales.

The film is described as "an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles." The story begins on July 4, 2008, and L.A. is on the brink of total social, economic and environmental disaster.

The Rock plays a guy named Boxer Santaros, an action star with amnesia who crosses paths with Krysta Now (played by Gellar), a porn star developing her own reality show, and David Clark (Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

"Dwayne, Seann and Sarah each have an adventurous spirit and I am honored that they have put their faith in me," said Kelly. "The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick."

Behind the scenes... The music for the film will be composed and created by prolific electronica artist and producer Moby. And most of Kelly's crew from Darko is joining the production, including DP Steven Poster, production designer Alexander Hammond, costume designer April Ferry and editor Sam Bauer.

Kelly is also creating an "expanded universe" for the film which will be explored in a nine-part interactive experience. Six 100-page graphic novels will comprise a prequel saga and the film's website is expected to be one of the largest and most elaborate ever designed for a feature film. "The graphic novels will work in tandem with the website, creating a more epic multimedia experience for those interested in taking the plunge," added Kelly.

Southland Tales is set to start filming on August 1 in Los Angeles.

Not exactly post-apoc, but it might be pretty cool.

Futuristic science fiction in a world near an apocalypse...that sounds good.

Have to learn more about what its about, but Hollywood risking any sci-fi movie is fortunate.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

I can now inform you that this movie will suck.

Aside from the "OMG!WTF!BYOBBBQ!" intarnet fanboy reaction to SMG playing a pornstar, there is pretty much no value to a film starring those three.

It's almost like they sat down and thought:"Who are the three worst actors on the planet?".

I have to disagree. Sarah Michelle Gellar is pretty damned talented. Say what you will about Buffy but it was a solid show and she carried the role well.

The Rock is probably one of the best fresh talents out there, as well. A lot of people write him off because of his history in professional wrestling, but if you take time to sit down and watch the guy, he can act. He was pretty much the only redeeming thing about Be Cool, and he did a great job in Walking Tall. He's smart, he's got charisma out the wazoo, and he's damn talented.

Well of course the Rock can act, he was a "professional" wrestler after all. Beyond that, the movie seems to be a pretty bad concept. The moment you have a pornstar, regardless of who is playing it, you have an unimaginative writer or writers who want an angle to sell his or their bad script. Plus the conspiracies in movies now adays just seem so hokey, I think. Who knows, I could be wrong... but that doesn't happen very often, really it doesn't.

Well, it's probably about a year away, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

"Dick + Warhol" = interesting, to say the least.

An action star with amnesia, a porn star, and a cop? What a mix for the main characters of the story. This doesn't sound very interesting to me. It's hard to tell whether or not it'll actually be any good with so little information, but it sounds uninspired so far.

My bet is it'll suck, but i've been surprised before.

Yes, as in "Look at the "Talent" on that".

Buffy is good if you are teenaged/horny or horny/drunk. Same goes for Cruel intentions and her other work

I'm afraid I never saw Be Cool (That was a Travolta vehicle about the music scene, wasn't it?), but I tend to write-off the Rock because of his lack of acting ability, rather than his involvement in "professional" wrestling. Yes, he has charisma coming out of the yahoo (or however you want to term it), but his acting ability is strained with anything past faking a punch.

I disagree.Everyone has their own opinions of course, but IMO The Rock can carry a movie all by himself without "Stiffler" and "BUFFY".When those two are added it will make the movie even THAT more interesting. Now,Im curious,Ive never seen Buffy play as porn star.....*slobber*
Where was I?Oh,ok....
Seriously,The Rock can act.He may not be a Oscar winning actor ,but he has some talent.Sean can act decent enough.I asume he will be the comedy relief.Sarah is a damn good actress IMO and she will add something to the movie that no other actress could.
