Special Robber Caves: Bug???

I Must Be Crazy 2

First time out of the vault
Occasionally, I get a random encounter with a cave. I vanquish the creatures outside the cave, then enter the cave to find many hostile robbers wearing combat armor.

The robbers run at me and try to punch and kick the living daylights out of me. I massacre them with an Avenger Minigun, Gauss rifle, Gauss Pistol, Super Sledge Hammer, and/or Mega Power Fist. However, when I loot their bodies, I find that they had powerful weapons like Pulse Rifles, Gauss Rifles, Mega Power Fists, and HK CAWS. Not once did they draw their weapons despite seeing me wielding my own arsenal of destructive weapons.

Is it a bug that they never draw out their weapons?

That's pretty strange. Last time I played FO2 the damn robbers kicked my ass a few times, up until near the end.

Something is up with your system.

Mayhap their Unarmed skill is higher than their Small Guns or Big Guns skill and they naturally switch to their proficiency? Cassidy will sometimes turn down a Combat Shotgun in favor of the CAWS, even though they do the same damage but the Combat Shotgun has a higher capacity.
Or mayhap it be just another bug script? I know one time where one of Frog Morton's brothers wanted to tango with just his hands, even though he was packing a H&K G11.
Or mayhap it be the drugs? Early on, the raider chick with a hunting rifle with shoot up with some Jet and just go head to head with her hands, forgettin' the firearm.

It's not a bug. It has happened to me also. To my knowledge, if encounter that cave and you're a low-level character, they have leather armors and small weaponry like sawed-off shotguns etc.

But if you're like level 30 or so, they indeed have combat armors, pulse rifles and so on.

Nah, I think it's a bug too. From what I remember, the raiders in those caves in random encounters always packed heavy weaponry and always kicked my arse, no matter what level I was at. It could have something to do with them using Jet or some other drug and turning to unarmed combat, though, it kind of makes sense, but I'm not sure.

try to understand that IT ISN'T a bug. I once found this cave being north to San Fran (where all the xp comes)...Cause my char was like lvl 30 I encountered combat armor/plasma rifle enemies.

And once being lvl 10 or so I encountered this cave with robbers except for the combat armors and laser guns. Only leather jackets and shotguns...

c3le, he is referring to the fact that the robbers attack him unarmed when they pack such lethal weaponry, *not* that the encounters are bugs. Refer to the first post puh-leeze.

Sometimes they start out armed

In certain areas in which I encounter robbers in a cave, I see that the robbers are all holding their weapons upon first glance. That is the only time that I see them actually using their guns to attack me.

However, almost all the time in the mountain areas just west of New Reno (where you encounter Fire Geckos, Aliens, Centaurs, and Floaters), I enter a cave and see robbers, none of whom are holding any weaponry. Despite the fact that I enter with all guns blazing and not once put my weapon away until the battle ends, these robbers seem to insist on fighting hand-to-hand despite having a powerful weapon in their inventory.

Something similar to that happens with Sulik sometimes. I equip him with a Super Sledgehammer, yet he might just un-equip that and enter combat unarmed.

Oh come on, c3le, are you retarded or something? When I say that they always pack heavy weaponry, I DO know that the weapons and the armour they have vary depending on your own level. You see, when you are a level 6 character, and you have such an encounter with raiders in a cave, a Desert Eagle or a Hunting Rifle is imho pretty lethal. And when you are a level 12 character and suddenly they are wielding HK P90c's, I don't think I'm exagerating when I call that heavy weaponry. Got it?

When I say it's a bug, I mean it's probably a bug or a glitch in the script or something else when they start to attack you unarmed. In any case, it never happened to me in one of those caves. What I do seem to remember are raiders (or highwaymen or bootleggers...) using Jet or some other drug and then suddenly unequipping their guns and insisting on fighting you hand-to-hand. Why did they do that? I'm not sure. Maybe they just ran out of ammo or the Jet made their Unarmed skill higher than their Small guns skill as Gunslinger pointed out - that actually makes sense.

Sulik unequipping his Super Sledge (or whatever) and fighting unarmed instead, happened to me too once in awhile. I don't think that's the same problem, though. I think it has to do with his AP's: when he has to run up to the enemy and he hasn't got enough AP's left to wield his weapon, he might indeed put his weapon away and start fighting hand-to-hand. Actually, Cassidy and Vic might do the same thing: I remember Vic putting away his Hunting Rifle and equipping a simple knife. Hm. I think you can actually solve that problem by entering the Custom Combat Settings and changing their preferences (for instance, for Vic: instead of 'ranged than melee', you should toggle 'ranged' and he won't use his knife anymore - not sure, though, but I think that's how it works).

Ok, my bad. I thought you were talking about the fact that the caves would be bugs...more perception next time...it's 6, y'know ..heh..but I'll find the memory chip...

the robbers probably fight unarmed for the same reason sulike will go unamred and forget about his super sledge... hes a complete moron.

actually, they might not use it because the robbers strenght is too low, most kick ass guns either have a minimun streght of 5 or 6... but i doubt it, its just a theory
