Spoiler. "Wondering about missiles"

Heraopx21

First time out of the vault
I visited after finishing the Raven Rock mission the local sattelite dish, well it was larger than yer average yin.
Anyway.
Once inside I encountered some Talon assholes, killed them and my mutie mate killed the scientist! DOH!!!!!

So after getting co ordinates on ma map I go outside to witness hunners of missiles landing around the facility!

Wtf! What was that about?

I am not sure it is fully explained, just like the ICBM you can launch in the game. I suppose its on its way to China?

You launch an ICBM?
Okay, why the hell aren't the Brotherhood or the Enclave entrenched around whatever this place is?

Seriously, the Enclave would just take it for in case those damn mutants are up to something.

Owen would send his people in order to protect the people from the wasteland.

The Outcasts would get it as it is a very rare piece of technology.

In Fort Constantine you can launch an ICBM.

What do those things do anyway?

I remember setting that thing off and getting freaked out that I'd did something wrong so I reloaded to right before I fired it off.

I am not sure they really *do* anything in relation to a quest, just some kind of random "cool" thing?

At least from all the post ive read about it on the Beth forums so far no one has found a real use.

I know what he means. This ghoul scientist used one of the huge old satellite dishes to connect to an old orbital nuclear weapons platform. And you can fire the warheads, seeing as they have no target they hit the ground around the dish. I kind of wish we could have target them where we want on some place on the map.

So basically they pissed on the BOMB001 location from Van Buren.

Does anyone wonder with all the plot devices around; ICBM, orbital missile platform, Bethesda choose to rip off Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 and come up with some crap about a water purifier?

This isn't Bethesda being uncreative, this incompetence striking them in the face.

God dammit, they treat nukes as if they were fire crackers!

I cannot remember right now, but I had taken from the scientist or found in the facility some code word. I reckon that was what set off the orbital missile platform... thought that at the time but was just kinda.... shocked... I really thought initially "The Enclave are pissed off I blew up their base man!" So after wards I thought it was probably something to do with the code.

Bit annoyed, thought that was Talon HQ, I better have a decent explanation for Talon goons after me from day one!!!

yeah the only nuke that does any real damage is the megaton one, the rest aren't even as powerful as basic artillery

hell the exploding buses and trucks seem to cause more damage than nuclear missiles. maybe if the US government had thought to launch cars at china the US would have fared better

Heraopx did you diffuse the bomb and refuse to help Burke? I did and I assumed thats why I had the talon guard after me.

Yeah I read in her computer terminal entrees, she said there was targeting activation codes at nearby sat stations that she needed but she would never be able to reach them. I had the explorer perk so I knew where they were, I found a code at the one east of the ghoul's tower but I couldn't find one at the satcom array to the west.
The terminal screen for the missle launch has the options for entering codes for the nearby satcom arrays, but when you try to enter one it does nothing, then it disappears from the terminal as an option. This happens with both satcom array options whether you have the code or not.
Needless to say I have it reverted to a save before that so I still have the options in the terminal, in case anyone finds out if there's actually a use other than launching the missles at the ground near you. So far it doesn't seem like there is any other point to it, which kinda sucks because the ghoul's journal entrees got me detecting, and then when I found one of the 2 satcom codes that she wrote about in the journal, I was sure it was a sort of figure-it-yourself sidequest. Hopefully I just haven't figured it out yet, it would be cool if you could take over the targeting system and wipe out a settlement, and you could watch it like the megaton nuke, even if it was a pre-determined location that you don't choose.

[spoiler:ab44c9ee32]You don't even have to interact with Burke to have him and his boss send out the assassins. In fact its tougher that way to try to piece together why your getting targeted, but there are clues...I won't spoil that part for ya. If you did interact with Burke and you talk to the sheriff about him after diffusing the bomb, he goes to arrest/confront Burke. Watch out because if your not quick Burke will toast the Sheriff, but thats part of life in the wastelands...hehehehe."[/spoiler:ab44c9ee32]

[spoiler:7550a2aafb]Yeah and when you go to megaton ruins after the demolition, only the area within the walls is iradiated  . A trully powerfull bomb i guess . But meeting Moira the ghoul there was fun though .[/spoiler:7550a2aafb][/spoiler]

Leave it to you to come up with a better use for the whole 'missiles coming down' than Bethesda.

I was wondering about this too. I did exactly what thedarkhorse did and reverted to a previous savegame in case I could actually do something cool or memorable instead of playing at missiles like an idiot child.

The ICBM is quest related. You have to fire it to get the goodies inside. It doesn't actually visibly destroy anything as far as I can tell.

So both are pretty much pointless, some background stuff you can do.

I feel so much like hurting the development team right now.
