Yes and no. If you want to download directly from the sporepedia, yes; but there are also quite a few user-created packs out there and you can add monsters by dragging their PNG files directly onto your spore screen if you're running it in a window.

If you're just looking to populate your world with cool creatures, downloading the fan-made creature packs is a lot easier than browsing the EXTREMELY SLOW sporepedia filled with crap that shouldn't have been uploaded in the first place.

So, uh, does the game become interesting after the creature part? Because i gave up, like, an hour into the game. It was just so boring, without anything substantial to do.
 
Does that segment consist of anything else than destroying/befriending other living organisms and collecting body parts?
 
Played it for one afternoon and deleted it. I like strategy games with depth, so after playing games Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis and Operational Art of War this is beyond boring.
