Spyware.

Ok, I'm sick of it. Everytime I to a site, I get @!_*! advertising, and McAfee alerting me that something's trying to dump spyware to my system.

What do you guys use to combat it? I use a combination of McAfee and AdAware 6 pro, with Adwatch.

You could add spybot to that list. It's got an immunize feature that (hopefully) block this kind of crap before it installs.

True, Spybot kicks ass it’s the best freeware program ever. you can use immunization to block some of the most known spyware, disable unwanted programs from startup registry and do lots of useful stuff with it.

But to truly minimize your spyware, just disable cookies, and dont accept temp internet files (if you have highspeed internet, you wont notice the difference) plus disabling java applets and activX controllers will help you protect your pc from nasty things. An easy way do it is to config “norton personal firewall” to reject cookies, activX controllers and java applets.

I personally use IE to config everything I need, NPF takes too much recourses and is rather annoying.
You can dl MS service pack 2 (still beta version) it has some interesting improvements  ,plus has a nice popup killer, and better support for Bluetooth (is very important for me).

Your company must be very very wealthy then.... but, that’s the price you need to pay for living in QC

well technically you’re right, most of the viruses are written for W98, ME, 2k and XP. Its pretty hard to find old viruses for win95 those days.

BTW, Im sure if you run a quick test with spybot you'll find quite a few of them tracking cookies.

I use Spybot and Ad-Aware and AVG on a weekly basis, but my pc is still the shit. Which is annoying. And which is giving me ulcers, I think.

So: they should shoot the people who are responsible for these annoyances, even when they're just 15 and only made this or that virus to impress a girlfriend or whatever. Hell, they should shoot their girlfriends as well. And their dogs. And so on.

That would teach them.

.read above on how to avoid the kind of shit spybot finds.
you need to understand, that you must sacrifice some of your surfing techniques in order to stay clean.
My pc has been clean for months without a single problem.

if that includes having to abstain from my daily dosis of wowee-zowee-kaboem-kaboem-kaboem-hardcore-triple-x-and-definitely-not-for-minors-kind-of-material, then i'll try to live with it, but thank you very much.
i wouldn't have a clue how to do all of the stuff you describe anyway...

I use Ad-aware.. Sure it removes whatever shit i allready have, but does anyone know how to actually prevent all sorts of crap from invading my computer?

It's been said before, but the best way is to use Opera, Mozilla or Firebird as your primary browser. Most spyware comes from pop-ups, so right there you're killing half of it and without using some worthless 3rd party pop-up stopper. A large portion of spyware is made specifically to work on IE, so switching browsers helps that part as well. If you absolutely HAVE to use Internet Explorer, go to the Security menu and disable "Install on Demand" and every ActiveX option. IOD and ActiveX are utterly worthless and you won't even notice that they're disabled. Killing third party extensions and maybe Java will help too.

As Sovz said, if you aren't going to change your browsing habits you're going to have to put up with spyware, but doing the above will keep your system pretty clean.

Or simply wait until MS will release SP 2 for XP.
At the end of this month.... probably

I've been reading some evil things on SP2 so far.

Like a connection limitations through the "firewall".

Other bad things I've been reading on Gideontech.

I might just hold off a while on SP2 until I see what other folks get impacted by.

I’ve been using SP 2 for nearly 3 months now, let me assure you, even the beta version is well worth it.

Edit:
those are the most well known issues with WinXp SP2

Conflicts with LaCie Firewire 800 drives

Causes problems with SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft CRM 1.2

Could break net tools that use raw sockets
Microsoft Systems Management Server Remote Tools cannot remotely manage clients running SP2

SP2 firewall disables Client Push Installation

SP2 users must update to Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2.1

Unless you use some of the described above programs/equipment, most probably you won’t notice anything significant.

Lucky for me i only get these data cookie files found on ad-aware 6. just wish i could blow this shit out of the water right off the bat...err scratch that Spybot just found a assload of spyware. i thought i deleted these things dammet!!!!!!!

Some people never stop to amaze me, how many times it’s been said:” IF YOU DON’T WANT SPYWARE, CHANGE YOUR SURFING HABBITS”. Don’t accept cookies, disable ActiveX controllers, and java scripts. It’s very easy to do it.

BTW, adaware sucks.
