Stanisław Lem, greatest of Polish science-fiction writers, passed away today in Cracow at the age of 84. Those of you that don't read know him as creator of the stuff for George Clooney movie "Solaris", and another one based on his works "Invincible" is in production. Those of you that actually take interest in sci-fi, I think had a chance to encounter his works, which were translated in 41 languages.

A writer, philosopher, futurologist, creator. He will be missed.

Dead or Alive has hitherto failed to update.

This is sad news. I read some of Lem's work. He is one of the greatest SF writers in the history, no doubt about it.

I wasn't aware he was still alive.

Solaris is a great book. The original Russian movie was pretty good, too. George Clooney's thing...meh, ok.

Oooooh, Kurwamacjapierdole. Fuck piss shit.

That really sucks, I'm a big fan of his work. That guy was one of the brightest minds of the last century; one of the brightest minds in Poland, for sure. Not only did I like his SF work, I shared most of his political views.

Solaris is a hit-book, known everywhere around the globe. I'm a bigger fan of his more sociological work such as Szpital przemienienia, The Hospital of Transformation, a story about a psycho ward during Nazi occupation. I doubt it's been translated into other languages, though.

George Clooney's shit just utterly stinks. It's ok as a stand-alone movie, but hasn't got anything the book has. Pretty much as Blade Runner and K.Dick's novel, really.

Shit, damn. :(

Sad news indeed... I liked his novels themes. As far as I know, he was the only science fiction writer coming from the "Red Block" who was well known in the west world.

I always liked science fiction more in concept than in execution up until I started reading his and Philip Dick's books. "The Futurological Congress" is one of my favorite books ever, and all the Ijon Tichy and Pirx books get reread as much as, if not more than, every other book I own. He was a great writer, sci-fi or not, and one of the very few authors ever that I think has a great sense of humor. He had a pretty succesful life doing what he loved and lived to a ripe old age, but it's still sad to hear that he's gone.

Yep, he could read ànd write.

What's with l'accent grave? Is there some hip new trend in grammar that I'm unaware of? Are umlauts finally going out of style!?!

...

It's just a way of accentuating the word 'and'.

I guess I should be cursivating it, but I carried this habit from normal life.

I mean sjeesh.

Yeah, but it should be an accent egu, since the tone gets longer, not shorter.

I don't have an 'a' with accent égu on my keyboard.

Which is slightly odd, since it's a frech keyboard.
