Star Trek On-line Announced

Maphusio

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Cryptic Studios announced today that they have indeed picked up the rights to the MMORPG "Star Trek Online". I still would like to join the Mockee (not sure on spelling and google isn't either) and launch "terrorist" attacks on the Federation as well as the Cardassians... Then again, I'm not sure when this takes place...

At any rate, I'm interested in this... I'm more interested in the odd count down thats ticking away on startrekonline.com ... Any theories or is anyone else interested in this? If so, what features do you seek in a Star Trek MMO?

Feature request #1: It not sucking teh big one. We've had enough shitty Star Trek games. Really, we have.

Feature request #2: Exploration has to be a big part of the game. They can look to Eve Online for some inspiration and improve on that and add in their own ideas (by improve I mean not make it quite as tedious as it is in EVE).

Feature request #3: Make ship combat actually fun and challenging.

Feature request #4: Just like in any MMO, there needs to be more good quest lines and less fetch-this and collect-340938098-of-this quests, as well as a well-paced sense of progression. A sort of random-encounter system like Blizzard is implementing in Diablo III would be great as well.

Feature request #5: There must be lots of disposable red-shirt ensigns to act as fodder during away missions. It's not Star Trek if ensigns don't die on away missions.

Marquis?

See I thought that spelling but only received google results of "marquee" so... I gave up the ghost.

And here here to disposable red shirts! They need to recognize their doom as well... Maybe an "aww crap" before something awful happens to them. :P

You Are the Captain: Command your own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior. [...] Recruit, train and mold your crew into an elite force for exploration and combat.
Interesting concept. It would be cool if you have to give commands to your crew in battle and not make it so fast paced as much of the space games are today (w for forward and ctrl to fire), introducing more strategic elements into the fights (maybe through dialogue). I hope they solve PvP and death in a nice way. If battles were harder to perform I think people would attack each other less making perma death more viable. Creating a new player/ship might become a pain timewise if you die though (recruiting etc).

Another idea from their board
Prime directive; "No identification of self or mission. No interference with the social development of said planet. No references to space or the fact that there are other worlds or civilizations."

...

maybe a mission or two where you might have to break it to save lives with two repercusions:

1. you save them and get XP but loose prestige
2. you stick to the prime directive gain prestige but dont get any XP
It's a good idea. Choice and consequence. Maybe they could take it even further, not affecting only the player but maybe the planet the action is performed on? Could of course be a lot of variables in play there but wouldn't be impossible to implement depending on how far they would want to take it.

Maquis, marquis is a noble title. Most likely this will set after Nemesis.

I can see it now...

Helmsman: "Captain, we've got multiple Romulan war vessels on approach vectors!"

Captain: "On screen!"

Helmsman: "Aye captain! But first, this message from our sponsors..."

*Pause for 15 seconds while the Fanta girls dance and sing on the viewscreen*

Another fucking MMO? Jesus. Enough is enough.
I will not play it. I'm gonna play WoW and pretty much that's it. I wanna play Conan but don't have a beefy computer.

This, I'm not gonna enjoy. I would prolly spam the game saying Nuclear Wessles, get my five minutes of joy and quit playing.

MMO's are the new WWII game. Yay.

Well yes and no.... WWII games are generally all FPS no? Where as MMO's can be, well any type of game. MMO sands for Massivly Multi On-line. So essentially, many people partake in the game in a social enviornment. Kind of like co-op (hears a Jeremy from PurePwnage "lawl" in head).

*In best Simpsons comic book store owner voice* Or.... Perhaps, the infamous "Picard Maneuver". The Ferengi, never, saw, it, coming.

I think at that point you would offer the Romulan commander to accompany you to your "ready room" for a fanta... and she would be JUST as hot as Lt. Tasha Yar's Romulan counterpart...*dreams* -Wait, was she attractive? I can't recall, its been so long and I'm pretty sure I barely knew what a woman was back then...

Wonder if the cushy multiplying softballs are in? Kyuu you pointed out an interesting thing, will the romulans/vulcan be the Nightelvs of the STO?

What I want to know is if the game will be played in the context of you being a ship captain and engaging in ship-to-ship battles (which would be awesome) or would you be an away team leader exploring undiscovered worlds with many strange situations? (also awesome)

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller
