Star Wars Episode 3: Attack of the Ad Campaign

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
Is it just me or is it way over-advertised?

I mean every movie gets commercials, but is one every single commercial break necessary? I remember seeing movies that I could go two hours watching TV and only seeing a commercial once.

Also, how about the product advertisements? I mean with most high-budget movies with action you see them advertised on kids products like cereal boxes and mainstream products like soda and chips. However Ive noticed SWE3 advertisements on lots of other things that I dont normally see them on like Cheez-Its (my personal favorite snack) and pretty much anything edible.

In fact if you count the product commercials that mention Star Wars Episode 3 in them as SWE3 you can see about three commercials each break.

Im actually getting quite sick of it...

Odd.... here in Blightly I honestly haven't seen a single ad for SWE3. I have heard one radio ad, and that's it.

It premiers here tonight - I would have thought we would get more ads than we have.

true dat VD. at our local grocery store they have a widescreen tv with surround sound audio playing Episode 2, surrounded by drinks and chips all promoting the new release.

they take 'market saturation' to new heights!

just wait until you have television screens while in line at banks or McDonalds droning on and on with product psychobabble. ah, you just gotta love it![/sarcasm]

Mikey, consider yourself lucky, as I agree with VD on this, ole George is going for the full court press and is getting quite tiring.

Oh God I just remembered!

I work at a chain of grocery supermarkets...a few months ago they installed, honest, a flat screen 17 TV that hangs just above eye level in every register aisle so customers can watch while they wait in line. I dont know whats sadder that people cant use their minds to entertain themselves for a few minutes or that company's think the numerous trash magazines and candy in the register aisle's arent already enough to keep someone occupied.

Sincerely,

I don't think SW was ever such a big hit here as it was in Amerika.... I mean, it was a big hit, but from the sounds of it you have it a whole lot more than us.

I don't think I've seen a tv ad that was solely for the movie but it does seem to be everywhere. Ads for the games, soda, everything under the sun. It's getting annoying but two more days and it should turn itself off. I'm surprised they bother to advertise though... you would think the name is enough advertisement in itself.

So SW wasn't that popular in Gross Britannien? I had heard it was popular there also?

I wouldn't know about other European countries, but in Croatia Star Wars really doesn't have the popularity and cult status it has in USA. Though to be fair, western products were frowned upon until late 1980ies and most foreign sci-fi flicks had a hard time making a break-through here. That may also explain why I've seen only one Star Wars Episode III ad here so far - at a bus stop, of all places.

Oh God, Ratty we seem to be living in different Croatias. First of all foreign sci-fi (as if there were domestic ones) were never ever frowned upon and they always had a big fanbase. Planet of the apes, 2001 and Star Wars were all big hits in former Yugoslavia. Secondly, and you should know that being a nerd and all, Star Wars is cult in Croatia, I know by the geeks at my college (however, they are not as crazy as the fanboys in Amerika). But you do have point that SWE3 isn't advertised much. I also have only seen it at bus stops, and I am yet to see the entire trailer or a TV ad.

My second point is that it's not just advertising that causes SWE3 to appear all over the place. Old Georgie boy is probably making a lot of money of these products themselves. Almost as much as from the movie itself.

Yeah, the thing I hate most about those big new movies that come out is the advertising. The second it's 1 month before release date, BAM!

All of a sudden everything has Matrix style writing, or includes "Gondor" at least once in it's commercial.

Come on, dudes. It's the last Star Wars movie ever. It's a major event, the culmination of almost 30 years of work...of course everyone is going to try to cash in on this.

Besides, most of the commercials have been mildly entertaining. I especially like the M&M dark chocolate advertisment where Vader force-chokes Red M&M.

I agree that Star Wars has a pretty big fanbase in Croatia and that Croatian SW fans are among the most devout and nerdy in the world, but Star Wars really isn't that popular among broad public, especially older generations (30+ years), who ought to remember and love the old trilogy. Face it, majority of Croats don't give a rat's ass about Star Wars, especially with all-important issues like which had a bigger bodycount - Jasenovac or Bleiburg - keeping them mentally preoccupied.

Well, I say, let's wait and watch the film, and then'll see whether or not the promotion campaign advertised a good film or a bad film....

Hey, and dont forget - mr. Bucket-headed-hevy-breather will be back, and well see him (without the bucket yet) trying to shave Obi with his lightsaber.

Well, it was a big hit, but not quite so huge as you americans ha dit. We have cult people and everything, but since this place seems over-run by the chavs (tracksuit wearing commoners who think it cool to have seven children at the age of ten), who think anything that isn't football is crap and gay and not cool etc, it has been put down a bit.
