Streets of Rage Remake

SkynetV4

Mildly Dipped
If you liked the Streets of Rage series from the 90's and are quite pissed that Sega never followed up with a newer, improved game, READ ON!

A group of very talented fans, using the Fenix programming language have created a remake of the series. Combining elements from all the Streets of Rage version (1, 2, 3, Game Gear and Master System), they created an entirely new game with a new plot.

The new features are:

- A larger cast: you can play as Axel, Blaze, Adam, Max, Zan and Skate. There are two hidden characters too!

- Artwork from all the games, fight a mix of enemies from all the different games. In the upcoming v5 beta version, all enemies will have up to 7 different color palletes.

- All characters will have complete movesets including a new running special attack.

- The game scales easily and will give you a run for your money (I used to dominate this game in very hard back when I played Sega Genesis, I haven't managed to finish it yet).

- Remixed music for all the Stages.

- Variable paths through the game, you can pick different routes to go through the game.

Please bear in mind that this is still a beta game and not a complete work, there are several bugs which still have to be fixed.

Have fun!

Man, I've played that remake to death. Just like the originals. I don't think I've logged as many hours with any game as I have with Streets of Rage 2.

It keeps crashing for me, tho', and it's a bit annoying that without a save function you have to go through all of it once.

The added moves look really cool, and Shiva as an unlockable rocks. But having Mr X as the second unlockable sucks, I'd rather have Roo or even friggin' Ash back.

I still remember how in the first Streets of Rage, instead of having those special desperation moves, a police car would just drive up and fire a rocket launcher to clear the screen.

One has to wonder what sort of conversations the cops in that car had to have had.

"Uh oh, we've got a 1086"

"A 1086?"

"Yeah, a 'use emergency rocket launcher to kill all bad guys'"

"Okay then... let's get some donuts afterward then"

I agree with you Brother, Mr. X sucks as a second unlockable. The new ucpoming v5 version promises several changes. Keeps crashing for you? Are you running Vista or XP, they released a patch to fix the Vista issues. Might wanna try that. The game is moddable though, so if someone wants to add a special character instead of Mr. X you can do so via FCPGE edit.

Did you finish it in Hard, Brother? I still haven't finished it and saddens me. If only the CPU controlled player wasn't retarded. It will run past a nice roast chicken that would save their life and charge at stupidly strong enemies like Abadede without any energy left.

The remake still has that, Generalissimo. When you press a certain key, a chopper will bombard the enemy with explosives. They are still working on the police version for certain stages. You still have the desperation attacks. They are still not complete for the new players I think because Adam has only 2 and the other characters have three.

YAY! I finally managed to finish the game on Hard. Holy shit, that was difficult! Max is really too slow. I don't remember having this much trouble to finish the game in Genesis.

Tips:

Keep enemies on one side of the screen! This goes double for Max, its really annoying to get hit from all sides while you are trying to break someone's neck.

Sliding and jumping kicks go a long way. Particularly against those enemies that are too dangerous to approach.

Take advantage of weapons. Pipes and Katanas will allow you to carve a path of hurt across the game.

Don't loiter on the edge of the screen. If the enemy retreats, chances are that they will get inside range (their range) and hit you. You won't be able to retailate.

If you are new to the game and haven't played it for ages, DON'T USE MAX UNLESS YOU LIKE SMASHING KEYBOARDS.

Sorry for the delays in my answers, I have to rely on weekends to check the threads in the forum.

XP. It happens pretty often that I finish a level and it just doesn't move onto the "level finished" screen, it just locks into ending pose + music. Happened to me on two different comps. Is it a known issue?

Hard is doable. I could finish it on mania on the Sega while twiddling my thumbs. Can't finish very hard in this game, let alone mania. Hard is tough but doable, as long as you avoid to incredibly difficult paths (going up the bar in level 1, or into the disco in level 2, or taking the first instead of the second turn in level 3)

Max was always tough to play solo, even in the original SoR 2. He just gets crowded too easily. The addition of a running move for him helps, tho'. I loved Skate in SoR 2, with Skate I could finish easily in mania (and with Alex, obviously), but Skate is a lot weaker in Remake. Blaze sucks as always, and Adam is too unfinished.

I'd say Zan and Alex are easily the strongest characters. They took away the power to Alex's SoR 2 grand upper-cut, which means he's not as mind-numbingly easy and repetitive as in that game, but his punch-combos are still very powerful. Zan's running attack is just too powerful, which might make him the strongest player character (after Shiva).

Can't get them to pick up stuff unless you set them to greedy, and then they pick up too much. Ironically, I find the only useful CPU setting is passive, because then they stop to the very left side of the screen, locking it in place and thus allowing you to lure in and beat up the enemies without risking luring in too many.
