A friend of mine, who knows I'm quite concerned about the future of this planet and of humankind, gave me the following link:

http://www.thevenusproject.com/index.html

The Venus Project presents a bold, new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total redesign of our culture. There are many people today who are concerned with the serious problems that face our modern society: unemployment, violent crime, replacement of humans by technology, over-population and a decline in the Earth's ecosystems. As you will see, The Venus Project is dedicated to confronting all of these problems by actively engaging in the research, development, and application of workable solutions. Through the use of innovative approaches to social awareness, educational incentives, and the consistent application of the best that science and technology can offer directly to the social system, The Venus Project offers a comprehensive plan for social reclamation in which human beings, technology, and nature will be able to coexist in a long-term, sustainable state of dynamic equilibrium.

The plans for the Venus Project offer society a broader spectrum of choices based on the scientific possibilities inherent in current technology and direct that knowledge toward a new era of peace and sustainability for all cultures. Through the implementation of a resource-based economy, and a multitude of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies directly applied to the social system, The Venus Project proposals will dramatically reduce crime, poverty, hunger, homelessness, and many other pressing problems that are common throughout the world today.

One of the cornerstones of the organization's findings is the fact that many of the dysfunctional behaviors of today's society stem directly from the dehumanizing environment inherent in the existing monetary system. Moreover, the currently utilized random implementation of automation and other technologies have resulted in a fragmented, self-defeating trend occurring throughout the manufacturing and high-tech sectors of today's global economy--namely the technological replacement of human labor by machines. The Venus Project proposes a social system in which automation and technology would be intelligently applied and integrated into an overall social design where the primary function would be to maximize the quality of life rather than profits. This project also introduces a set of workable and acceptable human values that are more appropriate and in balance with our present state of technology.

Science fiction? The unfulfillable (sp?) dreams of a bunch of idealists? What do you think?

It's pretty silly. Assuming there are enough natural resources and the means to get them for everyone to live comfortably, assuming AI and technologies can make all the good decisions and take all the 'boring jobs', assuming people are fine with that, assuming this is possible without a massive amount of money, etc....

It sounds like they are proposing a communist approach to the world. Not that I look down upon the idea but I think that they are ignoring human nature. People are greedy. No matter how much you research, you will never find a way to cure that.

Ah well. You see, not all of us think human nature is pure evil and greed.

I dunno Blade.
While I agree on being concerned on the future of humankind, I seriously doubt there is a one-time wunderanswer to the problem, that being a socio-economic system, a religion or a specific project.

Except, perhaps, intensive turnip culture.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not a believer in The Venus Project or anything. In fact: the whole project seems a bit far fetched to me as well, even amateurish. It's like they want to build Vault City or something. However, I do like the fact that certain people are coming up with ideas, that they are returning to their drawing tables. I doubt there is a miracle solution as well, but it's nice to see that some are at least trying.
And in any case: I still think projects like these could eventually proof to be more valuable than a project like setting foot on Mars.
Oh, I don't know. They're dreamers, probably, but what's wrong with that?

Ah, you're talking about The Turnip Project, aren't you? An interesting project indeed, I agree.

Nothing wrong with dreams and utopic societies as long as you don't try to realize them using violence and terror.

Here's a link, with slightly less utopic goals ;)

C'mon it's really obvious that they are using old ideas (the whole working for ressources is communism) adding fancy robot ideas, make serveral 20 minute video tapes of it, then sell each for 19 $...
and if you ask me, that's the sole purpose of the V E N U S P R O J E C T
thanks

I seem to recall seeing this on discovery. Interesting, but, blah.

Reminds me of CCP back in the 50s. I used to watch soaps and movie produced by them, and it's a riot.

IMO even communism looks good on paper. Everyone will put in as much effort as he/she can and in return they will receive all that they need. When one tries to apply that the whole thing turns to shit. There will always be discrepancies between "the plan" and reality. An Utopian society will always be a nice idea, and there is nothing wrong with them, but in the real world they are nothing more than nice stories with a happy end.

Communism, if taken as a Utopian idea, is fucked up. There was some good stuff in Marx but it's way too over-deterministic.

Weber, damn you, Weber- he's the dude!
