Tag Skills

Confalone

Still Mildly Glowing
So I started replaying FO1 the other day (for the umpteenth time) and as I was creating my character I realized that I always take the same tag skills. Small Guns/Speech/Barter so I decided to switch it up a bit and swap out Barter for Repair. Man i don't think I've used it once and I just got into the Brotherhood. Also that got me thinking about other FO games that I've played (FO2..and tactics to a lesser extent) Same thing pretty much. I don't think Ive ever played an unarmed character or one with energy weapons OR big guns. I always just stuck with the 14ml pistol and the other largest small fun i can get my hands on.

So my question is: what exactly am I missing here? I feel like I'm not playing a BIG part of the game by not experimenting enough so are there any other combinations that you guys have chosen that have really worked well for you?

Never been that good in varying my tagged skills either.
But some different combinations have been tested, ye.
Try big guns or energy weapons, and use unarmed or melee early for instance.
Melee and throwing is an interesting combination. 'nades can be a lot of fun.

What made replaying the fallouts for the 20th or so time a lot better for me, was playing hardcore/iron man.
Never reload save a bug bugs yer game.
One becomes a lot more careful, and one really feels the consequences for fucking up.
Usually my playthroughs consisted of me doing everything, everytime.
But when not reloading if you accidentally piss of an NPC , and perhaps ruin a quest, you get the feel of actually creating a uniqe story.

Why tag Barter, I don't know. Have you tried a combination of Small Guns, Energy Weapons and Speech for FO1 and Small Guns, Speech and whatever useful skill for FO2? That's my favourite combination.

Barter is not that useful. In both games one can accumulate a lot of wealth anyway.
Of course, if one roleplays a certain type of character, like a merchant, I could understand it being tagged.

That's a good point I always tag barter because I just assume that if I ever need to buy something Ill just have the caps, but come to think of it, the wasteland always end up providing in the end

I can understand Taging barter, Ive done it a few times, but then like Jack said, you gennerally acumilate a large quantity of welth anyway.
There have been a few times I have RP'ed a Medic (Doctor, Science, First Aid) and actually had alot of fun... I never had enough points to raise all three of the gun skills though, hm... *thinks to self*

I usually tag Small Guns, Speach, and Steal... I'm just a Rogue at heart I guess...

Is it my imagination or is sneak the most useless TAG skill of all time? I've NEVER taken it and have never been able to spot a use for it in the game.

There are actually uses for it in the game - like when you need to sneak! You rarely do, but sometimes you actually sneak. Or at least I do. The most useless skill to tag would be Gambling, I can't spot use for THAT one ;)

Unarmed + Lockpick + Speech works well for FO2.
Harder than with Small Guns initially, but once you get the PowerFist and the juiced up version of it, you rock the kasbah (on maxed out Agility + Action Boy perks).

Melee is nice as well, especially with the Ripper. I love that thing.

Maybe in casinos ?

with a luck based guy to make money easily.

Yeah, but there's something here... Early in the game you don't have enough skill points to boost Gambling high enough to make money easily. Also you don't have Redding on your map, that comes in Vault City at earliest, and the craps table in the Den aren't Gambling-based. In Reno you can forget about gambling to begin with, they all have loaded dice. Later in the game, when you do have skill points, you just don't need Gambling anymore because you're looting infinite guns!

Tubby (in the Den) can tell you where Redding is, or you can just wander down there because you've played the game before. It might be useful for a solo character with Small Frame who can't carry much loot. Also good for getting the armor implants, since you need actual cash for them.
