Tankarz!

First time out of the vault
I'm sorry if the answer to this is already generally known, and I'm just REALLY, REALLY stupid, but what is the deal with the tanker in FO2? I mean, if this f-ing HUGE tanker merrily sailed right into my oil rig, I'd want at least to find out something about it. Or the wierd power suited dude riding it in solo. With the his big ass guns.

ENCLAVE TROOPER: Sir! This ancient Poseidon Oil tanker just-

PRESIDENT: Shh!

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: Uh, sir?

PRESIDENT: I'm trying to build the worlds largest card pyramid...
Anyways, what were you saying?

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: Uh, like I was saying, an old tanker just docked. It had a single passenger, wearing regulation power armor. He DOES have an IFF transponder that checks out, but-

PRESIDENT: That's great! Let him in!

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: Shouldn't we do a background check on him first?

PRESIDENT: Naaaaah. I bet he's one of the recruits from Navarro! Do kings go on top or near the bottom, do you think? They probably weigh more...

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: A recruit with a personal tanker, sir?

PRESIDENT: He'll be an inspiration to others!

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: Have you been spending too much time with Vice President Bird?

PRESIDENT: Did you say something?

ENCLAVE SOLDIER: Nossir.

I mean, WTF?

*shakes head*

Plot holes sonny, It's all about plot holes...

Just ignore them and continue enjoying the game.

Hey, he wasn't alone on that tanker. All those... vagrants were on there... (they were called vagrants right?)

Loved your story though... really funny...

The tanker vagrants left, didn't they? I mean, I wouldn't go on a (probable) suicide mission with some kook to an oil rig filled with crazy genocidal soldiers. In fact, I vaguely remember that when you fill it with fuel, and get the NavComp working, the vagrants all mutter things like "Better pack all my shit up," and "Enjoy the ship."

Oww, I've never noticed that... well, some little boy or girl is missing his/her pet bear though if they all left...

Well, he did have a transponder that checked out, so it's probable that they thought 'Hey, the only one with transponder were the Navarro guys, so this ship must be them.'

And if they hadn't heard from Navarro in a while, they might get suspicious, but could also assume that something had gone terribly wrong and this could be all survivors.

Or maybe they didn't even notice the ship dock, unlikely it may be. Obviously the identification is handled automatically, and it's likely the Enclave authorities didn't expect a huge, working *tanker* to come out of nowhere and therefore had no-one monitoring the section where it docked.

I think that perhaps that the Enclave was merely lax in its duties. I mean, the IFF is supposedly impossible to get, as mere 'mutants' could hardly demolish Navarro to take it from the commander, right? That, and the fact that most of the bases defenses are automated, and the soldiers mostly concerned with the FEV production, I chalk it up to lack of manpower. 'Let the robots take care of the security measures',' no one can harm us here', etc etc.

So the authorization of incoming ships was automated, but that shouldn't make the president and his comrades who were to form the new world just warmly greet any ship that comes along, so long as it has a chip that says they're allowed to dock. And especially considering that there were billions of Enclave troopers just loitering about on the friggin' rig, they could and should easily have positioned at least a couple of fellas to govern and authorize incoming traffic, and not just have a computer do it. This was however, obviously, not impossible. Perhaps they simply put too much faith in the computers?

At any rate, someone should have noticed that an ancient rig was floating in to dock and thought "wtf, is this really right?", and reported up the chain of command, as demonstrated in animikes post.

That is a seriously well put question...one I quickly learned to ignore, but am nonetheless glad was brought up.

I'm sure Per is right, but for now if it wasnt a plot hole I would bet that Fireblade would be correct. In the small isolated environment of the Enclave I would bet people would think, much like the Vault-Dweller's, that their small hiding spot would never be attacked and that their defenses are flawless.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

hnf. I never wondered about this, since I was under the impression that the tanker regularly drove out to the platform... :?
