Ted the Caver

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
I have a serious thing to say. Its a bit long...let me start.

Yesterday I was surfing the web and found a link to a story. Really it was about one "Ted" the caver and a amatuer page of his discovery and exploration of a "virgin" (unexplored) cave. If you think you'll be as interested as I was please read the whole thing...you wont be disappointed:

If you dont want to read it all read my summary then click on the link below which will take you to the last page.

Basically this "Ted" spent days cracking away at a small hole he found when he realised there was a widening passage on the opposite side. His friend "B" helped him and after much labor Ted was able to open it and barely crawl through 'til the cave opened up on the other end. They noted odd sounds of scraping rock on and off while they had worked. In the new area he found strange pictures written on the walls that were very faded as well as a very rounded rock that appeared out of place. He had to go back before seeing how far it would go since he told B he would be gone a half hour. (B cant fit through the hole) The next trip they bring a new caving friend "Joe" who goes in ahead of Ted. Unfortunately Ted hurts his head badly and lets Joe go on ahead in the unexplored cave. Joe comes back screaming and they panicked and left the cave quickly. Joe wouldnt say what happened on the way home and the next time it was only B and Ted. Ted went back into the new cave this time with a camera and phone equipment to talk to B. Again Ted hit his head hard and broke his light as well as needed to leave the cave. He barely negotiated his way back with only glowsticks when he realised he could very loudly hear the rock-scraping sound from before. As he came across the rounded rock...it had been moved to reveal a new passage! Ted speeded up and got out of the cave swearing he heard something following him. He skinnied his way through the narrow hole so quick he got numerous cuts and had to rest for a week. He told B everything. As much as he didnt want to return...the concept wouldnt leave his mind. Here's the link to the last page where the story picks up:

Note the dates.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

P.S.

*SPOILER*

I searched a while and found the national speleological society has a forum where they spent pages debating the authenticity of the story. At first it was thought a hoax when an identical story was found printed online supposedly from a story writtein in 1987. However the actual online author "Ted" came forward after getting an email and admitted the supernatural elements of the story are false, but the rest is true. He fabricated some parts for fun and never realised the story would spread like wildfire. As for the story being printed in 1987...apparently someone just copied his story and put their name on it and a date.

Here's a link to the forum where Ted posted:

I really liked the Cave story, but liked this one better: The Dionaea House.

I was sure that this link would have been posted at NMA before, but I searched for "Dionaea" and it came up empty so I'll post it. I liked both of them, but I liked the Dionaea House better. Good reads, I enjoyed them both.

I won't even try to describe the Dionaea one, just read it if you liked the Cave story.

Hodags originate from Wisconsin. I guess they must have dug their way over there.

Tayl...wow...

That story blew me away. I cant thank you enough for that link since its an even better story than "Ted the Caver". Particularly in reference to the links. Although "Ted" had pictures "Dionaea" had links involving many online things like phone messaging, livejournals, and weblogs. Really must've grabbed anyone who's internet familiar by the balls. Glad to see in the last link on the weblog, through the journal, after the text messages, and emails that the story is fake...

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Hehe, you're welcome. I actually was going to make a thread about it a few weeks ago when I first read it, but for some reason or another I ended up not doing it. I can't really remember why now.

I really really liked it. It really had me for a day or so, it is just such an original way to tell a story that I couldn't get it out of my head. I try to tell as many people as possible about it, since I think that original storytelling like that should be rewarded.

@Ozrat: Heh, never heard of that before and I live in northern Illinois. Funny.

Great story.
