So, I’ve been bowhunting before, but never with my own gear; as of today, with some screws and washers and an Allen wrench, I put together a bow for me to use for both practice and sustenance:

Makes me happy. I’d have posted this in the Parade, but my main goal of this thread is to discuss all things related to archery; preferred arrowheads, Green Arrow, draw weight, etc.

Basically it’s an excuse to talk about something I like in an open forum

I always wanted to try archery, but never got around to it. I think there's a club for it around here somewhere. I'd like to just shoot a simple english longbow.

Ah yes, and its simple 120 pound draw weight lol

Joking aside, those things are fucking imposing and I love it

I think I'd want to start with a little less than 120 lbs :D

Me too; the draw weight on the bow I made is around 60 lbs; it’s good for me, but I also started with 40.

For a man your size I’d say if you’ve never fired a bow before, 40-55 lbs draw weight might be good to start

Tried firing from a...medium bow once? Dunno, it wasn't no longbow judging by its size, but no short bow either. Was a rather fun experience, though quite a novelty. I was somewhat tipsy and I almost convinced the man to sell me the bow (luckily, I didn't buy it) and a bundle of arrows. They were really well made.

All in all, a fun experience. Wouldn't mind trying it again.

That being said, using bow for sustenance seems rather ridiculous to me in this day and age.

I see where you’re coming from on that; I just have a dream of living off the land, you know? Always better to prepare for our dreams rather’n discount em, imo.

That being said, there’s been some events recently that have caused me to postpone my dream, possibly indefinitely. Of course, should that work out, chances are it’ll be better than my dream ever could be.

It's a weird dream, if you ask me. Livin' off the land and talking about it online. The juxtaposition seems wrong. I know that sounds rather brusque, but it is. Just wtf
Then again, do what thou wilt.

Well, I appreciate the input regardless. Like I said, my dream is becoming less likely and less necessary as my life develops.

Mostly it was because I wanted to run away to the woods, where no one would bother me, and I could escape my past. As it stands now, I’m happy being in contact with certain people who care about me for who I am; and who I am now is Arthur Welles.

Anthony Sylvestre is dead and buried, where he belongs (to be dramatic).

Make sure you don't leave it stringed up like that unless you're going to be using it.
Bows like that take a LOT of practice to get good with. I prefer compound bows.
My dad had a few beautiful recurve bows but I think I'm just going to give them to my uncle. Might post some pics tomorrow.

Your picture might give the wrong idea due to the red stripes on your arm, but be sure to NEVER dry fire a bow.

Used to chat on a another board with yank who was into bow hunting. The whole stalking/quiet -aspects to it. I've never hunted, only fished quite a lot, but I do understand that game meat is healthier than industrially produced.

Yeah, I always preferred meat rare, with no toppings or preservatives. And as neighborhood butchers sadly go the way of the dinosaur, I’d rather eat meat I sourced myself in the near future.

I was just thinking that if I knew a hunter I would definitely buy my freezer full of, say, moose meat every now and then and then maybe not buy any other type of meat. Well maybe some fish and/or chicken, or even get those from fishers game bird hunters, that would be ideal. I have actually gotten some fish for free actually from some guys I know, it's great. Guys like that, they might not even charge you for that stuff if they have extra they can't store.

@MutantScalper speaking of which, you ever find yourself in the states feel free to hmu. I like to think in the near future I’ll have some meat to share.
