The best Fallout 2 experience?

First time out of the vault
Hey guys, first post in this forum. I have recently begun playing Fallout 2 and I just reached Klamath and started thinking about all the mods that exist to this game. And that's what brings my question to you guys!

I'm playing an unpatched and unmodded, super-vanilla Fallout 2. I cannot stop thinking about the things I miss due to this. So, my question is, what mods do you think that I should use? I want to keep the in-game content as vanilla as possible, so one mod that I think fits me perfectly is the High-res mod.

And what patch is the latest (doesn't have to be any official patches) and most stable patch, and what is it called?

Another thing that bugs me is the color-problem that occures. The only fix I know is to kill "explorer.exe" in the taskmanager in order to get the game running properly. But I suppose you know a better way to fix my problem.

I'm running this game on a Windows 7 64-bit OS.

Thoughts?

Hah, the color problem... I forgot about it. I had it too, once... Can't remmeber how I solved it, or if I solved it at all. It should be well documenter here, I'll look for it.

Restoration Project is a huge unoficial expansion to Fallout 2 which solves tons of bugs and restores a whole bunch of cut content (new locations, characters, quests, dialogs, ...) that couldn't make it to the final game because of time issues in the development back in 1998. It also adds entirely optional content (that you'll want to install!) from the finest Fallout moders, like new talking heads or new sprites for when your followers wear armors. You most definitely should get it and start a new game!!
RP is made by people that take Fallout really seriously, so don't be afraid of not getting a real Fallout 2 experience if you install it!

EDIT: Try to run the game after installing RP, might fix your colors glitch. If it doesn't, try to install Sfall, or just wait for a more knowledgeable user than me, don't worry, they are everywhere in the area :)

Oh my god. That sounds like a must-have expansion! I can't wait to install it. It's without doubt the best news I've got regarding Fallout in many many years!

Thank you so much for this Izual! Btw, does it matter in wich order you install RP and the High-res pack?

No problem, and I think you should install RP then install high-res.
Once again would be better if confirmed by someone else.

Enjoy your game :)

Izual was right, except one thing - there's no need to install anything else after the RP, because sfall and High-Res patch are integral part of it already. Just grab the RP, install it, run the game and play it until you'll die due to sleep deprivation!

edit: One more thing. Start new game with RP, because vanilla saves aren't compatible with it.

Waiting for July 15th? Yes, that might be good, but current version is really fine if you just can't wait to play this amazing game!

Thank you guys, you've been great! I will install the RP-pack as soon as I get home from work tonight. DAMN I'm hyped! I have only played Fallout 2 once, and it was a good 4-5 years ago. With all the bugs gone and the new content in it... It will be like a whole new game. I cannot express my gratitude enough!

Is there a similar unofficial "expansion pack" to the original Fallout (1) as well? Cause' I might wanna play that one again as well.

And what will the contents be of the final version of the RP? Aside from other bugfixes, I think I can manage without it. :)

New Fallout RP adds two new quests, one in San Fran, one in NCR, adds bots in Sierra Army, fixes some Animation bugs, adds more races.

I think it adds more but I am not sure.

For Fallout 1 - Try Fallout 1 FIXT.

You should continue to play Fallout 2 the way it was released, well maybe fix your color problem, bugs and the high res mode might add a nice touch. Then replay it with the mods mentioned here. Personally, most fan added/restored content has been a let down and just water downs the games "true form".

Yeah, that's what I think too. But I've already finished the game once, a couple of years ago. So the new content (didn't install all of it, just a tiny bit) is a nice touch actually.

Anyhow. Noticed that the awesome text-input-thingy, along with the rest of the HUD got REALLY small. I can live with the HUD, but the text-input thing is too small :/ I guess there's nothing you can do but to lower the resolution in order to see it better.

The high-res is part of the RP?

I'm playing the RP right now, the version from Killap's sig, not the current beta, and there's no high-res for me.

EDIT: HA! There it is! Didn't even notice that extra little option.

There are quite a few sFall compatible mini-mods on either Nirran's or TimeSlip's website. I honestly forget if its either of those users. Somebody has a website with a bunch of sFall mini mods for Fallout 2.

Check out the "Party Orders Addon Mod" for sFall. It adds hotkeys to order your party to do things like spread out, heal, or loot dead bodies.

On High Res mod: Yes you can play fallout in very high res but if you're on a regular size monitor I would not recommend setting the res higher than 1024.768. Otherwise you get super small UI/text.

As you've since learned, as much as the Hi Res mod doesn't do anything to the canon, it's more like a "Zoom Out" mod than actual "Hi Resolution". It still makes the game look prettier, but at some point shrinking everything down becomes unplayable. I've tried out the game at the maximum resolution a few times, and it became like watching an ant farm. I remembered playing the original games on a PC that wasn't that much more advanced than they were designed for, and things like choosing every pixel to inspect became impossible. You'd never think to miss it until it's taken away from you.

But as per your original question, if you want to try out stuff that INTENDS to be as true to the spirit of the original game despite adding in new content, then killap's RP is a must. It's up to a quiet release of version 2.2 and from what I'm hearing it's quite damn stable. But at the very least, install killap's Unofficial Patch to fix the myriad of bugs that never got completely addressed by the time Black Isle got sacked. Compatibility may prove to be an issue, depending on what version of the game you have, as a friend of mine was unable to properly run the Unofficial Patch on his Good Old Games copy of FO2 without making some adjustments on his end to compensate for the differences in code. The RP comes with Hi Res options built-in, so downloading the full Hi Res Mod isn't necessary, unless you really want that RTS-grade level of zoom.

But one thing I highly, HIGHLY suggest is this: Try to explore the game to its fullest before you go searching for mods. FO2 in particular is a massive game with such an abundance of branching possibilities that almost a decade of playing the game over and over was never enough for me to "experience it all". The only thing holding me back from uncovering EVERYTHING the game offered was my own play habits, and lack of flexibility in trying different things. I loved to read about Stupid characters, but I never had the desire to create one of my own. I had fun reading about what the Chosen One could do if he was born the purest incarnation of absolute malevolence, but I never liked playing a "bad guy".

There's tons on offer in FO2, so if you have the time to dedicate to this wonderful game, I strongly urge you to do that, sans mods. Pop in the Unofficial Patch, and just play to your heart's content. Once you feel like it CANNOT offer you anything more, then it's onto the mods...
