The ever widening cultural gap in Mainstream Media

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
So today I was on youtube(as I frequently and randomly search videos that I find interesting, plus its a great time waster) when I came across this...

I know, most of you will agree that it is either ear numbingly horrible or absolutely brilliant. To me it is the horrid summary of this past generation's(at least in North America) obsession with not only internet subculture as it relates to music, but of it's overall integrity in mainstream culture.

What I am asking, is what are your opinions on the state of not only music, but of the internet phenomonons that in a way directs this generation and possibly the next?

in the funny department: i hate this kind of pop music but this is brilliant

yours was total trash though. ;)

Tokio Hotel mix with some other crap.

North America is obsessed about censoring boobs and sex stuff, but still they create such shits like this jerkoffing "music", probably trying to create generations of idiots and morons.

Wonder what kind of people are listening to this music...

"State of music" kind of depends on what music are you listening too. Yeah pop music is in the shitter, but I personally don't care about it. I'm mostly listening to experimental electronics stuff and it is still in pretty good state, so I couldn't really complain about the "state of music" in general. However it makes me a bit sad that rock music is mostly crap nowadays, and I do enjoy good rock music too. Same for hip hop..

Now more than ever pop culture = shit. Seriously, what is this crap? Emo Screamo mixed with white hip-hop\dance\whatever?

How can these guys dress\act like this and still claim to be homosexual is beyond me.

Not that I particularly like this kind of music, but you guys just sound like a bunch of angry old men.

I'm good at bitching, that's all.

And these guys ARE fucked up a bit, don't you think?

after some consideration and in depth psychological breakdown of the OP's post I can surmise;

If Moby and Slipknot got together,
If Cher and S-Club 7 got together...
these respective couples had children, and then these children had their own children,

This is the mutated and deformed offspring that would be produced. The result of which is a *ahem* song... that is capable of scaring the carpet on my otherwise normally stable floor.

I fail to see what the big deal is. Personally I am not a big fan of the "screamo/scene" crowd but I do not ever feel the need to bash them, to each his own and all that.

Of course I might be a bit biased in regards to defending peoples musicial choices. I spent quite a bit of time during high school championing my love for Black Metal. :P

To OP: nice find! I laughed my ass off. Emo kids on a trip to the 80-s! But, like Bal-Sagoth here said, there is no big deal, I guess dumb people need to have their fun too, and these kind of music videos are very anecdote-worthy.

SuAside, yours was funny XD

Well, anyway, here's some better music:

Then again, if something is good quality music I'll listen to it, Japanese pop music tends to be well done, and the people can actually sing, unlike in the American scene.

This is a subject that I have thought about extensively over the years. I have for some time worked for radio stations (or operated on-line ones) and have noticed something lacking with not just the North American radio scene but various forms of media in general. I agree that popular culture seems to be very bland and more importantly constricted. This in no small way is due to the industries being controlled by a few corporations in North America.

Look at the popular music scene. Almost all north American radio stations are owned by half a dozen companies (thanks George Bush). This also is the same for most other forms of media (news paper, TV).

So if you have vast corporate entities worried about music sales above all else... Well, you get a very small slice of the proverbial pie. Jump back 20 years, you had radio stations able to risk playing something that may be perceived to be absolute crap but, what if it's the next big thing (i.e. Nirvana)?

It's unfortunate that the powers that be believe the risk is not worth the reward, the juice not worth the squeeze... An interesting result of this stunted pop-culture is what could be perceived as a degradation of society.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very anti-FCC regulating the air waves. As Christian Slater said in 'Pump Up the Volume', "Say fuck and shit a million times if you want too!" -If someone does not like what's playing, they should seek another station. Our children will not be destroyed over nudity they will seek on the Internet or in a magazine. They will not suffer from shock and rebel against the world because they heard a curse word on the radio that they heard on the playground in the 4th grade. North America, needs to grow up, parent a little better and work on diversifying its culture via doing the same to its media or it's airwaves will be doomed to be the repetitive uninteresting and not listened too when there are plenty of alternatives (internet radio, CD/MP3).

Well said

That being said though, their airwaves are already doomed, since most people don't listen to radio at all, and TV is largely useless with the invention of Internet.

I don't know if I would say that people don't listen to the radio in the states any more or less today than they did in the recent past. I know from my own personal experience (how vastly infantile that may be) that my friends and I stopped listening for the most part. We choose to listen to something other than the same 50 songs stuck in a rotation for years on end. I've found myself frequently listening to talk radio, just because its more entertaining than the music stations.

In north America IP TV has not hit yet. This is largely due to the lack of Internet infrastructure. Believe it or not, America is VERY far behind the rest of the modern world when it comes to broadband lines. A good portion of the country can not get better than dial-up service. This I would attribute to the same problem Russia faces, too much rural land to cover.

IP TV will blossom here sooner rather than later though. When it does, I think those networks that don't adapt will find themselves like most newspapers in America... Up the creek without a paddle... Or waterlogged with a tinge of a New Yorker's hair product on them... *sniffs*

Well, I did only mean the music stations. Listening to talk shows or news on the radio while bored and driving is a different kind of thing. Could as well be any kind of noise =)) Music radio, though, has been kind of obsolete since the invention of mp3 format. Since the tastes differ so much, I'd expect a lot of people to choose their own selection over a radio station - since every single station I know aims for "mainstream" taste, be it classical, pop, 70-80's rock, rap or christian music. Other genres are pretty much abscent on the US radio.

Still, I'd bet there is a smaller percent of young people in this generation listening to radio and watching TV than in the previous. It will only become obvious by the time the next generation kicks in, since right now it all averages out. From my personal experience, most of the people I know would rather choose to buy/rent a DVD of a movie or a TV show, for many different reasons, rather than watch it on TV.

I believe that Internet is (without a doubt) will become if not already the most populous medium as a means of entertainment.

I see it as a negative and postive impact on youth culture(like all things, except prog rock 8-) )

No doubt about it though, I think that the band I posted above is absolutely horrid, I'm just using them as a means to kind of show maybe one of the worst sides of internet subculture, or youth culture in general. The monotony and commercial appeal that almost dictates their existence for the next 5 or so years, comes from a niche subculture that eventually grows until it becomes the dull and tedious drivel we see all the time. We are all guilty of playing into it, even in good humour.

Kurt Vonnegut had this idea that we really weren't guided by our own free will. In a way our enviroment helps shape our actions, our principles and sociatel relations. Are we almost preprogrammed to be this way?

Actually, they are not as horrid as some other stuff about there - definitely not as bad as some rap stuff (ex. I wanna love you, or similar stuff that's absolutely disgusting), but it's musical value is indeed close to zero - a horrible mix of styles, and no originality. TBH it would be a nice tribute to 80s if you remove all the stupid screaming and all the gayness from the video. Also, that ahem... group of people is not very popular, and don't even get a good rating on Youtube =) Some of the mainstream stuff out there is even more scary.

Is it just me, or does the state of pop EXACTLY describe the mainstream media industry, because if I'm not mistaken, Pop refers to the at that time popular music, that's what they taught me.

All i DO know, is that back in the day, when my father was still a hippy, and a car cost a nickle, pop music used to be good.

Jizz in my pants is awesome. The guy in the group from Lonely Island has done so much great work.

On the topic of music, I think Maphusio's got it down a lot. On the site I run, a lot of people have similar dissatisfaction with the state of R&B music. I think the problem is that music is stuck marketing for two groups. The Clubs and The Cell Phone Ring Tones.

Put the two together and you've got trash to no end.

You want good rap? Look for the artists still trying to get out a message. The Spooks or Blackalicious! Those guys should be played on the radio.

Anyway, thats not really here nor there and I think I've contributed all I can. Thanks SimpleMinded

Well, I'm not exactly looking for good rap, I'm simply stating the fact that there is very little of it left these days. 90% of it is about "'dem cars and 'dem hoes".
