The Fall character animations video

Hmmm, looks better than I expected. Doesn't prove anything though. And I see they kept the stupid haircuts. Oh, and nobody likes a mustache. Seriously. Get rid of the Tom Selleck fetish.

The character animations look way too, i dunno...robotic. That's the word I'd use to describe it. I dunno...I'm still skeptical on the whole thing.

It looks pretty nice. Is it robotic ? Maybe it's because model starts and finishes in certain stance. But while moving it looks quite natural.

If there will be towns with whole bunch of such good-looking-moving characters it should be worth seeing.

Yeah, I really think they look 'robotic' because we see them standing still at the beginning and at the end. Gives a weird kind of effect.

These videos actually look smoother than I had anticipated. Good stuff.

They look good. It'll be interesting to see if they can take the neat animations and make an enjoyable, playable RPG that's more than just a sorry marketing ploy to tack the Fallout name on yet another failed product.

I would definitely call those animations smooth. The way they start and end doesn't really bother me as that's how most demo animations are done anyway.

Good job :lalala:

I don't post here on NMA really at all, but seeing a post about a games animations, and being a professional animator in this industry, I was compelled to take a look. I can see fanboiz gushing over these "animations", because they lust for the game perioid, but these are not good at all. I don't want to say 'terrible' to avoid coming across wrong, keeping this civil, but these motions are just not good. No weight, no timing, no anticipation, no acceleration/deceleration...balance is off on most of the motions (center of gravity) and as someone else pointed out, they are extremely robotic. ( You know how HARD it is to kick start a 125cc let alone a 250!? You can't just 'sit' there...you have to jump on that fucker. )

How many Disney movies and Pixar/PDI movies have you seen, or videogames have you played with excellent animation(Jak and Daxter, Jak2, Mark of Kri, Out of this World, Prince of Persia) to then look at these and say they look good?

The only way they will possibly learn and try to do better is if people are honest with them, and not tell them all is good when its very much not. These are not even midly competent.

It looks like linear interpolation with a key pose evenly spaced every 10 frames, and poses that are not even strong enough to carry the motion.

The bike motion has a leg pop as he picks up the bike(oh and those bikes weigh 200 - 220 lbs depending on size, but he lifts it like its a mountain bike), , again the kick start has ZERO weight or force and he never has to balance the bike as it drives...in a perfectly straight line(at least they put suspension travel in).

The 'wall' animation has no anticipation or weight. He merely translates up the wall without crouching down and jumping, and the motion afterwards is linear in velocity all the way through. Could've at least had him spring off the top instead of lowering himself carefully, which would've added some color.

The 'body salvage' is worst of all. Snappy, poppy footsteps, slows down awkwardly as he goes to set up the carry, and he never has to balance and torque to get the body up, as if it weighed 10 pounds. They could've at least had the right foot balance his COG forward enough to make it somewhat believable. Try placing your forehead on the floor, with your feet back like in the anim, and try to pick YOURSELF up(without your hands pushing up from he floor!), let alone with a 160 lbs body on your neck. Look at the carry portion...the feet float as they walk with little compression(again from the 160lbs on the shoulder), and the contrived 'heavy breathing'.

Hell, someone tell SilverStyle that if they pay my fee I'll slam out animations for them, or at the very least tweak what they have. Again not to bust on them, but to honestly tell them their animations are just not competitive at all with whats out there now. I mean if you're trying to be a pianist, and all your family and friends say you rock, and indeed you don't, they're not doing you a service and you never get better. Look at American Idol auditions...all those people were told they could sing, and they can't! They get mad and cry and it's their moms' or dad's that say they are great and they're just not.

Construcive criticism folks, so fanboys please don't get all worked up. :)

Hi guys

I am a lab instructor for "Game Character and Scene Design" at Full Sail. If a student turned in those animations, I would fail them. Our students get 3 weeks to model, texture, rig, and animate a character, and I've seen better work from them than this. I'm not saying this out of any personal spite towards Silver Style, I'm just telling you that this is not finished work.

The Dirt bike animation

If you watch the feet, they go through the floor, and "ice skate" a bit as he moves around. They should be firmly planted so he can use his strength to pick up the bike. If they moved in real life, he would slip and prob bust his face.

IMO, he grabs the wrong handle of the bike when he goes to pick it up. Pick up a bike yourself, even if its a bicycle, would you grab the far side handle?

The motion of the bike speeds up as reaches its upright position, but it should start fast and then slow down as gets upright, its opposite in this anim.

The shock and spring motions on the bike actually look pretty good, but could be a little more exagerated. The wheelie pull up looks pretty weak tho, again it looks like he put no effort into it.

EvoG hit all the other bad parts on this one, but overall his poses look unnatural through-out.

The Wall Jump

EvoG covered just about everything...

IMO, his leg should swing up to the wall before he pulls himself up, right now he does it while he is pulling himself up, so the leg doesn't really help him get up on the wall.

A pause to look at the ground while he is at the top of the wall would make it look more convincing.

On the landing after coming off the wall, there isn't enough shock, his legs should bend a lot more, and he should bounce a bit more.

The Body Hump

EvoG covered everything here, im not gonna add anything.

I don't have any professional experience so I'm just looking at it from my perspective of, I like games. For me, the animations look fine. If I saw those in a game, I wouldn't go "OMG, he lifted a bike! Why didn't he show more effort when doing it! This game is so bad." I mean, the character builds look fine for me, and the characters appear to move fluently. I don't really know how to judge the screens to see how they would work in the game as I've never tried before but, I think they look fine.

Like lilfyffedawg said, I wouldn't mind some weight/effort thingys if it looks ok to me.

I'm not going to say these models can sing... erm, move... whatever... but concider this: they're models of characters that will be in game, not some one time movie models (if I got it right). They'll have hell more to perform in game. I guess with good budget all could be done perfectly but as I noticed in game industry everything has it's price. It's sad but there are allways some tradeoffs.

I would prefere to see a model doing other activitys at the same level I saw in these anims than see him riding a bike in uber natural way and doing noting else.

Come on, in fallouts model couldn't even run stright but in zigzag pattern and it wasn't the most important thing in the world. 2d games forever ! :)

I thought it was good for a computer game. But then again I haven't played any recently released gaymes for quite a while. (probably won't play the Fall till it's abandonware as well)

This time, I'll avoid taking shots at The Fall and say that I'm inclined to agree.

Which means I'm disagreeing with EvoG but he's making Pheonix, so that's okay. It means I get to bag him about his character videos later. :)

Oh come on now DU, when have you and I ever disagreed?! This is a side of you I'm not used to. :D

Oh and if you want to bag on my anims, I posted two links in my post above, just for the heck of it. Enjoy!

Either way, I'm not sure why I bothered saying anything. Its obvious the fans are satisfied with the animations, so my saying anything just brought out the wolves. Oh well.

Cheers

Ok this being my first post I have zero credibility. I really enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2 and for another similar game (The Fall or FO3) I would prefer something very similar but 3d and with Co-op availability. And make the game very moddable and allow for future expansions. Thats all I want, i've been waiting so long for a sequel, almost anything would suffice at this point.

I cant say I actually buy a lot of games, but I did pay for FO1 and 2 and I just want some company (i could care less who does it) would make a 3d sequel.

The wheels on the bike seem like they spin too long when its stopping.

Oh, and the guy climbing on the wall has a shadow on both sides.

Other than that, they looked pretty good to me.
