The Fall for Mobiles

Its not that US studios are neglecting your market just that it takes time to make a dozen different version of the game.... 8)
Care to explain how it takes so long to "translate" the American games for the British market?
And no, we very rarely get them in British English, almost always in American English, so it can't even be that.

Plus, what Ashmo said.

Ashmo wins the Nobel prize for Truth, ffs.

I also play UO in a nice English-German language mix. Cute.

Big_T_UK,
I never did understand why the UK version of a game would be different from a US version. I always assumed it wouldn't be... like Silent Storm. There was no difference between the UK and US version just packaging and distribution. It was the legal negotiations over those that caused the delays. So I just imported. Besides even if we don't speak the Queen's English what's the issue? I lived in England for most of four years and a lot of the people I dealt with didn't speak the Queen's English either. Some really bad accents, just like everywhere else. :)

And you are telling me that most US games are the same game as the UK release you just have to wait a month or two longer, right? It must be the same distribution and contract delays causing it then.

Maybe a developer can chime in and help us understand... because it seems both sides of the pond are frustrated by the whole process. You can't blame us for wanted to get our hands on a hot product as soon as humanly possible.

Ashmo,
Are you say that most US games released in Europe are in English? Or are they just imports from the US & UK as to get them sooner?
I also realize Europe has a large English speaking population. Even when I lived in Germany as a child they taught English in the middle school as a second language. Which to me is a good thing.
I wish they would make Spanish a mandatory language class here in the US since we have such a high number of spanish speaking citizens.
As far as Horizons goes I think they gave the same bad costumer service no matter what part of the world you lived in. :)

A month or two? Sometimes it's six months.
I would also assume it was a distribution, or maybe producition problem.

oops, seems he meant mobile as in phone and not "mobile" gaming in general (a la the new Final Fantasy type gaming coming out)

Funny, even with trying to reinvent what he says, he's still sorely mistaken. The entirety of North America has developers for mobile phones from both sides of the pond and domestic as well. In fact, games have been a selling point of cellular phones for quite some time in the US. Nice try, but save the unsubstantiated Euro pride for someone who cares, Carsten.

He really needs to unplug his head and look at the market instead of parroting off some press line like the typical N-Gage whore. He is getting so bad, it's to the point where mere word games can't save his ass. :)

It really is funny.

The Nazi party is long dead, but censorship lives on strongly in Germany, including censorship involving...wow, one hell of a logic loop there.

Welcome to one of the greatest ironies in the world. :)

The US censors nudity. How screwed up is that?

Anyway. Yeah, our censorship is a bit over the board, but the only two things it affects is violence and promotion of racial hatred (although the latter is a problem with Germany in general -- German politicians get silenced if they make any statement that could be interpreted as being pro-Nazi or antisemite, even if they just say that a people can't be guilty as a whole or that Israel is not innocent in the Palestinian conflict). The violence thing is a result of the same scapegoat logic Americans follow tho: if someone plays violent games, watches violent movies and then kills his classmates with a submachine gun, it's violence in media that is to blame, not the people who let him get the gun, the people who let him go that far, or the people who didn't stop him. Social problems are so much easier to digest if you can point your finger at someone else.

But that's another story. So is that it makes more sense to censor violence than to censor nudity. Or that it's funny that an American has the nerve to talk about German censorship at a time where his own country is going aboard with censorship and control fantasies (no hard feelings, it'd be ridiculous to argue which country is more fucked up when the entire world has gone insane).

As for the mobile games, I only know that mobile telephones (including games, ringtones and all kinds of gimicks) are very successful in Germany and handhelds definitely aren't (at least not to that exceptional degree). I think under these circumstances the guy most likely meant the telephones when he said "mobile".

I don't miss the irony, Ashmo, I was hoping you would get it. The whole censorship thing is often an absurdity given that...well, we'd be ancient before I'd really finish listing the reasons. The ostrich method of dealing with things is never good. If you censor something or make it limited, it is turned into a sought-after taboo, and it has been proven that humans have an innate curiosity to investigate what they are denied.

But then you get into the US econo-political scheme, where corporations are having a stronger influence in politics to the effect of the FDA not allowing certain medical procedures because they would effectively bankrupt a few US pharmaceutical companies overnight, and that's a topic for another time.

I still prefer to have the greatest US irony to be that the ones the most outraged by President Clinton getting a hummer were those in the US themselves. Nobody else really cared, especially the Japanese. Most of their media thought it was funny as hell and a Bill & Ted-esque "duh" to the world, and their rulers get the Royal Johnson waxed routinely. If anything, those of foreign countries were outraged that the president of the US couldn't get a better-looking <s>concubine</s> intern. :)

Shit, being a US Citizen, I was pretty pissed off that clinton couldnt get a better looking woman to suck his whore....

I'm just a simple man, a soldier..... one of the MOST hated groupes of people in the us.... i never supported clinton untill it was brought out that he was gettin blowjobs from his intern.... then i supported his "actions" if not his policies.....

Elissar - If the President of the United States cant get a BJ from a hawt chick, who can?

Just my opinion, but I don't need any games for mobiles.
To all nine hells of eternal damnation, there's a german RPG,
it was taken from Pen&Paper to PC.
"DSA - Das schwarze Auge", translated "The Black Eye".
I don't know if it made it's way far from here.
It ended in a Hack and Slay. Two persons standing in front of
each other, hacking them with their swords.
ROLE PLAYING in it's purest form!

I've seen an English rule book for that and heard it was selling rather good outside the country borders, actually.

I know a bunch of people who swear on it.
It was never a world I did prefer, but that shall not mean,
that it is not a good work been done.
It's just sad that they take the name of a RPG,
to make a Hack and Slash from it.
