The First HoI3 AAR

Played demo and welll epic fail...dident like it at all...
I completely disagree. While it has all the flaws and quirks Paradox initial releases are infamous for, I think it's incredibly engrossing with significantly greater depth than HoI2. I was fairly bewildered until I figured out how to manage the command structure. Things ran much more smoothly after that.

I started out my Germany game by producing a few S.M.79 Sparvieros license-built from Italy. Try doing that in HoI2.

Just talked to one of my Xfire contacts who already had the game and he complained about massive lag, ugly map (I agreed from what I've seen on screens) and odd interface and diplomacy triangle. I haven't played the demo or full game yet (too much games to play ;)), so do any of you have the same complaints?

Keep in mind I'm only playing the demo.

In general, no. I think people are overreacting because their expectations were so high.

Massive Lag: I've seen people complaining about this, but I haven't experienced it personally. There's already a 1.1 patch out that is supposed to fix it to some degree. I think it depends on what hardware you're using. On the other hand, the game does play and progress more slowly than HoI2. Too slowly.

Ugly Map: This one I can't agree with at all, and I was very skeptical about the map until I played the demo. The quibbles I have with the map are more about how it displays information than it's aesthetic appearance. It looks better than I thought it would, and the scrolling is super-smooth, at least on my computer.

Odd Interface: Again, I don't really agree with this at all. The interface is significantly different from HoI2, so you have to learn it all over again. Once it begins to make sense, though, it works quite well. It's much better than, say, the Victoria interface. Learning the new interface is sort of like learning a new operating system. I've spent about six hours with it so far, and I'm just starting to feel like I'm getting the hang of it.

I found this very useful learning AAR thread over at the Paradox forums, too:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=416326

Diplomacy Triangle: I'm not sure what the problem is, here, either. The diplomacy triangle is a return to a feature from HoI1. Really, it makes perfect sense to me, so I don't understand what the complaint is. Could you be more specific?

Now, this is not to saw HoI3 is perfect; it's far from perfect. That's what all Paradox games are like at first though. Go back and read what people were saying about EU3 when it first came out. They complained about everything, and not without justification. Today EU3 is superb.

People will complain that they paid their money and the game should work perfectly. That's understandable, but I've come to appreciate the way Paradox does things. They released the game. It's out there and playable and very enjoyable in my opinion, at least if you take the time to learn it. They'll look at all the criticism and suggestions and make patches and expansions and in time HoI3 will be a masterpiece. It's such a complicated game they could never get everything right without releasing it and letting the public declare what's right and what's wrong. You have to judge it not only by how it is today (and, like I said, I think it's fun as is), but by what it has the potential to become in time.

Personally, I wait until the expansions come out and buy the complete version. You'll have to wait a couple years for that, though, so it depends on how patient you are.

1.Massive Lag well its big problem becouse its not hardware its software based from what i read i got lag for example on: c2d 3.0Ghz,4gb ram and 4850...so fuck yee game runs great no complains here my PC is crap i just buy new one so i can play this game...

2.Ugly map yes im going to buy new PC so i can play with ugly map no offence but cheak out map mods for EU3 its clear and smooth compared to crapy map from HOI3...

Map mod made by me improved everything speed and visual of game http://www.terranova.dk/viewtopic.php?t=3474&highlight=flatmap and later on improved by my buddy http://www.terranova.dk/viewtopic.php?t=3696&highlight=flatmap
we did better work than those paradox guys if i had their money and team well...

3.Odd interface its so odd that i had to turn AI for help its total mess...at least now i can focus on combat...

4.Diplomacy you know whats wrong with it? well evil is evil and good is good that means every game will be similar you cant change much so every new game you start will be boring...

5.AI help is only feature i like it makes you fell like bloody president not moron who needs to run everything him self...

Personaly i dont think you will wait for complete edition i doubt it :)

One more thing...you said people complained about EU3 right...but who wouldent they even complained about first addon NA why? well let me guess it only added fev more years exactly time line with Napoleon but it was something more a massive improvement in speed and that was about it and now pay 10$ for a patch...

He only said it was just dumb to change from the good working HoI2 diplomacy system to a more difficult one. Probably hasn't played HoI1 than.

I think I'm going to do the same.

Ok fev things people who complain about lags well patch 1.1 dont fixes it and adds other problems so recomended is to stay with 1.0...

Any way i try to play as Poland so i started early so i got time to prepare and well it was so fucking boring i gived up...EU3/HOI2 even ROME is great game but HOI3 is total crap...

ADVICE DONT BUY IT...wait for 2-3 expansions maybe it will be worth 20$ as complete edition...

That sucks. It's probably caused by the same thing that made HoI2 lag; ghost divisions. I read somewhere on the Paradox forums that the AI keeps creating fleets (and armies) with "empty" divisions in it or no divisions at all. I remember capturing Marseille as Germany and there was a French ghost fleet without divisions stationed in the harbor which remained there until the game's end in 1964. :? A glitch in an AI script doesn't seem that hard to fix, yet it's apparently still present in the sequel... Also, what new problems are introduced with 1.1?

I'm a huge fan of PI and their games, but I no longer buy them when they ship.

I bought EU3, and was disgusted until NA and IN came out.

I bought Rome and was disgusted until VV came out.

I also played EU 1 and 2, and enjoyed them from the get go though.

HoI 2 was awesome, but I think that with HoI 3, I'm going to wait for a few patches, or the first expansion.

Just played the demo. Can't say I enjoy it thusfar, mainly for the difference from HoI2 and the highly unrealistic map (Alaska for instance, equals Belgium and the Aleutians have disappeared). Ah well, atleast Paradox did their research on major events.

FYI, some modders on the Paradox forums fixed the speed problem last night by altering a couple .lua script files. I tried this on the demo, and now it runs as fast as HoI2.

EDIT: Here's the link:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418002

I've tried invading Poland 4 times now, and it's beenfun and different every time. The first time I didn't know what I was doing, so I just surged ahead with everything I had. It went okay in Poland, but France punched a hole into southern Germany that sort of messed things up. The second time I thought I had a better grip on what I was doing, but I actually did worse. The third time I figured out how to manage the command structure and I conquered Poland in three weeks by micromanaging everything. The fourth time I set up the generals the way I wanted and let the AI run the invasion. It didn't do as good as I could do, but it didn't do badly either. It managed to blitz through the line and create pockets which it then cut off and destroyed.

The game has flaws, and some of them are serious, but it's hardly a disaster. As it matures it's going to be incredible.

Stalingrad is apparently in the wrong location as well.

Who approved this map for release?

as I read on paradox forums, the requirements are pretty high to a static game, I mean, Pixel Shader 2?
I can play the game, but there's a lot of lag, I mean, A LOT, and I have 2.8 Ghz and 2gb of ram, just because of my Radeon 9600 I can't play decently. I'm not sure, but I think that 9600 doesn't have Pixel Shader 2. I remember that I couldn't play Bioshock, because of it.

Make sure you try the LUA script fixes I linked to above. They made a huge difference for me. It may be that you just don't have enough horsepower, though.

Also, here's an excellent thread on diplomacy:

I'm having problem saving the files. Every time I click "save" after I made the changes, appears "Is not possible the create the archive blablabla.LUA". And I noted that I can't change the settings of the game as well, every time I click on Apply in Settings, it appears that the file is protected against changes. Does someone know the reason?

edit: YAY I did it =^__^= #gay

hm, ok, well, I found the solution on the same post with the LUA fixed scripts. I saved them in other place and then copied them to the script folder. And now for some reason I am able to change the settings.
The game isnt running reeeal smoothly, but its playable now, I think I can spend some time on it :D Thank you UniversalWolf

No problemo.

Not that I really did anything. Heh.

You can learn alot reading those Paradox boards. Some smart cookies over there.

Just picked this up yesterday and I'm really enjoying it... the 1.4 patch is out, and the games runs better than it did at launch.

Also, the first expansion Semper Fi is coming out soon, and looks to be quite decent.
