Cool. I'm still going to wait, mostly because I picked up EU:ROME some time ago and haven't gotten tired of it yet.

I played the HoI3 demo for about three days and I could see the incredible potential of that game.

At this point I'm going to wait at least until Semper Fi comes out. The developments do sound positive.

My favorite way to play HoI2 was as Romania. First of all, refuse to cede Bessarabia to the Soviets so you end up at war with Stalin, then later refuse the Vienna Diktat and end up at war with the Axis. Your only hope then is to join the Allies and live long enough for them to reinforce you with expeditionary forces.

I never made it work (I could hold off the Soviets, but not the Soviets and the Germans - who can usually attack through both Hungary and Bulgaria), but it was fun. If you're looking for an experimental game in HoI3 (and you don't mind hopeless scenarios), give that a try.

I've been wanting to play these games for a while. Is HoI3 a good game to start with?

The apocalypse expansion thing for the second game seems awesome enough. I like nukes.

I'm playing as Russia in HoI2 currently. For some strange reason The Winter War event never fired - thus no option to go to war with Finland - I decided to not bother with Finland as I wanted to keep my belligerence low. Instead I've focused on battering the Japanese off the Chinese mainland. It looks as though there will be three China's for the time being - the Nationalists, the Communists, and my glorious Stalinist nation of Shanxi.

On the other end of the continent, the Nazi swine have begun their invasion, although the lines seem to have stabilized quite quickly. Once I have secured the Chinese mainland Germany shall feel my wrath.

I would love to give HoI3 a go, however it requires pixel shader to run, alas I have no pixel shader to give them.

When you say "these games" what games do you mean? It sounds like you mean Paradox games generally.

My advice would be not to start with HoI3, actually. HoI3 has an extreme level of detail and complexity which some people love and some people hate. At this point in it's development it's still got some growing pains, too.

If I had to pick one Paradox game for you to buy and play today, it would be Europa Universalis 3 plus it's three expansions, Napoleon's Ambition, In Nomine, and Heir to the Throne. After three expansions it's the most polished game Paradox has ever made, it's very fun, and I think it would give you a better idea of what these games are like generally.

Couldn't agree more... EUIII Complete + HttT is simply amazing.

Also, EU:Rome is good (but underrated).

the only problem with EU:Rome is that its much more about domestic policies and internal power struggles than about foreign policy. Sometimes it may get a bit boring, but its still a great game.

HoI as said, its the most complex of 'these games'.

And EUIII + all expansions is just any armchair general need. I'm currently playing a game a the Byzantine Empire haha, and I could rebuild all the empire practically! The only bad thing is to wait for the badboy levels to get lower haha :/

There are many countries that are fun to play in EU3, but the Byzantine Empire is my favorite.
