Any good recs? I'm somewhat a noob of the genre but have played the likes of Panzer General, People's General, Super Conflict on SNES, Advance Wars on GBA

Civ V went hex based, and is supposed to rule.

Alpha Centauri is probably my favourite.

Panzer General II was always the bes tof that series, and now there's 10 years worth of great mods/maps/campaigns out there. I still fire up PG2 from time to time.

Since you have a DS, check out Panzer Tactics, it's basicaly a modern PG2 clone.

On the more harcore end of the spectrum I always liked Gary Grigsby's World at War series, Steel Panthers, East Front/West Front and those series. Good stuff.

Armageddon Empires, it's a masterpiece. (Not real war though, but a postapo-theme.)

Yeah cant praise it enough, really great game.

Also would add an oldie WH40K: Rites of War .

Final Liberation, someone already pointed out Rites of War but I always found FL a better game.
Plus FMV space marines and commissars. :V
