The Panama Papers

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Well, this just happened:

"2.6 terabyte leak of Panamanian shell company data reveals "how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of politicians, Fifa officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, celebrities and professional athletes."

The Mossack Fonesca offices

Got to love the age of internet :postviper:

It probably won't have any major immediate effect, but everyone knowing that your information is never 100% safe in the hands of these companies, might prevent many money loundering schemes in the future.

As an aside, it's also interesting that many countries in the "wake" of recent terrorism (at least that's the official stance) are trying to curb encryption, which is very important in cases like these.

Was wondering, is this leak supposed to uncover all off shore scamming? Seems to me that it's targeted against certain specific folks and entities. I'm pretty sure that there's plenty of off shore scamming going on in the States as well although these documents don't seem to focus much on the US.

This is just the 3d biggest offshore money loundering company and they also said that there will be more documents uncovered shortly, as there are a bunch of them.

Also, Jackie fucking Chan is among the customers.

A similar situation with Icelands prime minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson and the president of Argentina Mauricio Macri.

The others in this list don't really shock me, lol. I wonder who they will reveal next, because i'm pretty sure they are not done yet (with the big names).

He's certainly a lot less sinister than Hillary, and more likely to get whipped by the Donald. So I hope that it does.

To be fair, I don't know anyone that was at all surprised by these news.

I do wonder where Trump's tax haven is, and how he evades taxes.

Why do you assume that he does? He is easily the most scrutinized person on the planet right now, the chances of him actually being involved in such a scheme without anyone knowing range from highly unlikely to downright impossible.
Because all businesses avoid and evade taxes in some way or the other, and since the american tax system has more holes than swiss cheese it's highly unlikely that he's not using some loophole or the other to reduce his taxes. Not necessarily illegal evasion, but just avoidance that is scummy, but not scammy.
And, as @Izak mentioned, he has a history.

Also what's necessary is for these allegations to be substantiated. The various law enforcement agencies around the world can't act if they don't have hard evidence. In some countries they might be so corrupt that they won't regardless of the evidence.

Just as I thought. Doubt these revelations will tell anything about these US tax havens.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-became-one-of-the-worlds-biggest-tax-havens/

Contrary to popular belief, notorious tax havens such as the Cayman Islands, Jersey and the Bahamas were far less permissive in offering the researchers shell companies than states such as Nevada, Delaware, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming and New York, the researchers found.

Part of the reason that the U.S. looks so attractive as a tax and secrecy haven is that the country has not signed on to new global disclosure standards that are forcing anonymous companies to reveal their real owners around the world. Compared with other developed countries, and even traditional offshore destinations such as Switzerland and the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. now appears to be among the most lenient and secure destinations for the fortunes of the global rich.[/quote[

Not from the Panama Papers, but still mildly amusing.
