Which game in this series is, in your opinion, the best one? I've been meaning to play one for some time, but I heard the latest is crap.

Also, are there other games in the same genre, i.e the building of a small town and a system of bakers, metalsmiths woodcutters, etc, that are good?

I've played the Caesar games, and they got a little too epic for my taste, almost Sim city epic, and I prefer a medieval setting.

I second that. I play Settlers 2 occasionally to this day. For me, the series end on this one.

Still have to play Settlers 1, but so far I agree that Settlers 2 is the best. For 3 and 4 I only played demos and they may be worth investigating further. Settlers 5 is Fallout 3. And, lastly, the sixth one... well... and that's about all I can say about such a bland game.

Knights & Merchants.
I'd say I like it even more than I like Settlers.
However, it may be difficult to find... legally that is.

I have Knights and Merchants. It ended up being a little repetitive and too.. German.

For me too. I remember that I played The Settlers because of those cute little people and mostly economic gameplay. I played demo of S3 and they turned it into an RTS and changed the settlers graphics into less cute ones.

I also loved Settlers 2, and got increasingly disappointed with the releases after that. Terrible stuff.

However, I briefly tried out the latest one (recently released) and I actually thought that seemed like a lot of fun. I don't think it'll beat Settlers 2, but it seemed far better than the last few games. I might get it.

If you think that looks like an RTS, try Settlers 5. Shameless AOE clone that one.
If I remember correctly, the only RTS element in S3 and 4 was that you could directly control your troops.

As for the cuteness... eheh. Starting from 5 it's completely gone. Stupid seriousness all the way.

The premise is good, I guess. And it is more similar to the old Settlers games, but I wouldn't classify it as a Settlers game.
On its own, I found it very boring and too easy.

I played 1 in multiplayer. It was fun because of the competitive angle and the music was great, but it took too long and winning relied too much on luck (getting the right resources in the right places and the right amount of open space to make optimal manufacturing loops) and then watching battles play out that you had no control over.

Never played 2.

3 was much like any RTS, fun to play through once, no more.

"Settlers 2" is the best in the series, like everyone else has already said.

I also enjoyed one of the clones a lot, I think it was called "Alien Nations", but I'm not sure.

EDIT: yep, it was called "Alien Nations", you can download the demo here.

The alternate name listed for that - "Amazons and Aliens" sounds 50k times more cool and doesn't ring the 1988 movie bell.

Bleh. Settlers 2 demo froze on me after a few minutes of play. I'm not going to bother. Too bad.

Ugh. It's uglier than the original Settlers 3. One thing that I really hate about 3D games is how ground textures look :/ .
