The Spear...

...So, I have a question regarding the spear in Fallout and because I thought, some more opinions would be good, I post it here.

First, this is the spear we all know from the game:

So, now the question. On the side of the spear, you obviously see something attached. Everytime I saw it, I recognized it as a kind of blade because it looks stiff and is in the same color as the spearhead itself (not in the sharpened version, tho). But others say that it is some kind of cloth wrapped around the staff.

My question now, what do you guys think about this? Metallic blade or cloth wrapped around? I would really like to clear things up, so that this discussion ends.

100% cloth. I suppose it's there to distract the opponent when the spear flies around him (like with the chinese spear), though it should be more colourful.

Piece of cloth of course.

The cloth not just act as a distraction, but also stop the blood flow down from the spear tip and therefore avoid the user have slippery blood all over his/her hands.

In the sharpened version we can clearly see it for what it really is; a delicious cheesestring for later consumption.

actualy the reason why the chinese spear has the cloth around it is to absorb the blood runing down the staff while you are stabing enemies as the blood if its runing down the staff could cause the hands to slip from it.

It could be distracting when some dude is coming straight for you, aiming a spear at your heart

Hence why the Chinese spears' cloth is almost always the color of crimson.

Ok, thanks for the replys, seems to be pretty obvious.

I don't understand how it's obvious that it's cloth. The first spear to me seems like it's a weird halberd of some sort, while the second recolored one is messed up by the artist who did the recoloring since the axe thing now is colored like a piece of cloth.

It seems as if the metal on the grip goes out and form the axe thing and then goes in and merges with the wooden grip again.

While it definitely should have been drawn better, more three-dimensionally, it makes no sense as a polearm. The 'hook' is too far back; you'd have the spearhead halfway through someone before it can catch anything. Even if you miss with the point, you can use the jagged back edge. Also, a metal protrusion on one side would unbalance the spear, making it difficult to wield and useless for throwing.
