The Wire Season 5

The thing about the Wire is that you have to stick with it, realize that the first few episodes just set up the story and let the plot build. That's a lot of patience for a lot of viewers, but it ends up being quite rewarding.

Inspired by this thread, i decided to watch the first season of The Wire, and i must say, i'm very impressed! It's fun, entertaining, has VERY good actor play. I'm surprised i've never heard about the series before, but then again, that's Poland for you. :/

Do the other seasons keep the level of the first one? I'm a little afraid to read each post above carefully, to not spoil it for myself.

Every season of The Wire is awesome. IMO, Some are better than others but they are ALL worth watching. If I HAD to rank them I would go:

1. Season One
2. Season Three
3. Season Five
4. Season two
5. Season Four

Agreed.

The Wire is very deep. There is FAR MORE characters in The Wire than in most other shows and almost all of them have their own plot lines in which we seem them develop. Also, theres an underlying message and not everything you see is purely for entertainment value like most other shows on Today.

To be honest, I thought the last season was probably the weakest- it was just too rushed at the beginning. they needed to take more time with it. The news story was pretty weak- did we really care that much about Templeton and the editor's desire for a pulitizer? I watched it more to see what happened to favorite characters. The serial killer thing seemed a bit unrealistic.

I thought season 4 was very good even if it was mostly a set up for the last season.

But I think the core of the show are seasons 1-3. especially 1 and 3 where the focus is on the Barksdale gang.

I was pretty partial to the Barksdale crew. Aside from Bunny Colvin, I'd say that Stringer was my favorite character. I also really liked Bodie.

So HBO is showing season 5 over again. So I'm watching one of the beginning episodes where Carcetti decides to dissolve major crimes and it brings back to my attention that Carcetti could have had the FBI bring down Marlo if he would have given up the Clay Davis investigation to the Feds. But no, his hard headedness and scorn for Republicans fucked everything up. Whats even funnier in retrospect is that the local prosecution let Davis walk.

Seriously. I thought bringing in City Hall added some a powerful dimension to the show.

The Carcetti story was great.

Yeah, its funny because during season 3 and 4 I actually thought that Carcetti was going to do some good. I mean, he did all that shit, made all those promises to guys like Daniels saying that the days playing the numbers game are OVER. Whats crazy is I actually believed him. I think he was really sincere but after he got into office all those obligations just took a back seat to whatever had to be addressed now (budget, schools, his own personal advancement, etc.)

If I was Daniels I definitely would of got some face time with the mayor before I stepped down and let Valcheck take over the shop. Even if it didn't change anything I would have at least given the mayor a piece of my mind.

I'm kind of glad Valchek got the job as commissioner. Its going to be the guys downfall.

To be fair, I think Carcetti did want to do some good. Getting rid of Burrell and going after Davis helped, and the guy did manage to save the schools. But I think Carcetti's fall comes down to the problem of the constraints imposed by the institutions and the personal ambitions of individuals- two themes that ran consistently through the show.

Think of Sabotka as another guy who tried to do right but went bad in the process of trying to save the docks.

What Daniels does is stop making compromises as did Kima. But Lester, McNulty- they made compromises for their ambition- to get Marlo, and they went against the system and paid for it.

The thing that gets me is the female hispanic journalist gets shifted off her job, the prick reporter wins a pulitzer and the editor stayed on the job? What the fuck happened there. Seriously, I think no one really cared about that plot at all.

I am glad that we got to see all four kids from last season again.

The scene with Omar searching for Marlo in the boarded up vacants, each boarded up vacant being a tomb, was great.

Ok, now, after watching seasons 1 to 3 and half of the fourth, i can form a fair opinion, and it's: holy jeez!

Fantastic actor play, great scripts, believable and realistic, yet very captivating and intense storyline. Definitely the best tv series i've watched in years.

Out of them all, i think i enjoyed season 2 the most. I loved how the plot unfolded, leading up towards the mostly obvious, but, nevertheless, breathtaking end. Actors playing the Sobotka's and the european gangsters were out of this world. I was almost crying when The Greek answered the call when Frank was walking towards him and the rest of the pack, not suspecting what the deal was about.

The other seasons are also highly entertaining. I hope season 5 and the rest of season 4 will keep up the pace.

Anyway, thanks so much for bringing the series out to daylight, el_prez and Welsh. I'm ever so glad i've spend the time to watch it, i don't regret one second of it.
