The thing about the Wire is that you have to stick with it, realize that the first few episodes just set up the story and let the plot build. That's a lot of patience for a lot of viewers, but it ends up being quite rewarding.

The news story was pretty weak- did we really care that much about Templeton and the editor's desire for a pulitizer? I watched it more to see what happened to favorite characters. The serial killer thing seemed a bit unrealistic.
I thought season 4 was very good even if it was mostly a set up for the last season.
But I think the core of the show are seasons 1-3. especially 1 and 3 where the focus is on the Barksdale gang.
