Actually I don't think he was. He just smoked a ton of weed.

I know his mother was a teenage prostitute and he had no father, so he was raised by a Russian Jewish family who had some sort of coal delivery business in New Orleans. When he was a little kid he would ride on the coal wagon and blow a tin horn to let people know the coal had arrived.
