I think it's a great policy to gain more control over the Middle East, a very resourceful part of the world. Gathering, arming and training religious fanatics and leaving them to take over the power in a country is a good way to create the ideal enemy, who you can take on when things have escalated in a good vs bad guys fight for "international freedom & democracy".

And you think these folks really thought that a militant form of islamic fundamentalism would he a national threat? on 8/11 most people didn't think that militant islam was that big a threat. honestly, it still isn't as most of the problem with militant islam remain in the middle east. After all this wasn't even something to worry about until the Iranian revolution and that was only shortly before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Back then the problem was the Cold War. Heard of it? That's when two countries were pointing nuclear missiles at each other and could radiate the entire world at the virtual push of a button.
