I just got a e-mail from an old friend tonight. It has SCAM written all over it, but he is a good friend, and I trust him. The trouble is, he isn't very internet literate.

So, here is the e-mail, would anyone care to let me know whether or not this is a Scam/virus/whatever.

To all of my friends, I do not usually forward messages, but this is
from my
good friend Pearlas Sanborn and she really is an attorney. If

she says that this will work - it WILL work. After all, what have you
got to
lose?

SORRY EVERYBODY.....JUST HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE!!! I'm an attorney, and
I
know the law. This thing is for real. Rest assured AOL and Intel will
follow
through with their promises for fear of facing a multimillion dollar
class
action suit similar to the one filed by PepsiCo against General Electric
not too long ago.

Dear Friends, Please do not take this for a junk letter. Bill Gates is
sharing his fortune. If you ignore this you will repent later. Microsoft
and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an effort to make
sure
that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used program, Microsoft
and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it
(if
you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period. For every
person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $245.00,
for
every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay
you
$243.00 and for every third person that receives it, you will be paid
$241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your

address and then send you a cheque.

I thought this was a scam myself, but two weeks after receiving this
e-mail
and forwarding it on, Microsoft contacted me for my address and within
days,
I received a cheque for US$24,800.00. You need to respond before

the beta testing is over. If anyone can afford this Bill Gates is the
man.
It's all marketing expense to him. Please forward this to as many

people as possible. You are bound to get at least US$10,000.00. We're
not
going to help them out with their e-mail beta test without getting a
little
something for our time. My brother's girlfriend got in on this a few
months
ago. When I went to visit him for the Baylor/UT game.

She showed me her check. It was for the sum of $4,324.44 and was stamped
"Paid In Full". Like I said before, I know the law, and this is for
real.

Intel and AOL are now discussing a merger which would make them the
largest
Internet company and in an effort make sure that AOL remains the most
widely
used program, Intel and AOL are running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Intel can and will track it if
you
are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.

For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you
$203.15. For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on,

Microsoft will pay you $156.29. And for every third person that receives
it, you will be paid $17.65. Within two weeks, Intel will contact you
for
your address and then send you a check.

I thought this was a scam myself, but a friend of my good friend's Aunt
Patricia, who works at Intel, actually got a check of $4,543.23 by
forwarding this e-mail.

Try it, what have you got to lose????

This is only part of the letter, the original message runs longer than that. If this is true, which I am doubtful, we all can make some money.

So has anyone heard about this?

That is what I thought. I don't care much about the scams, but I am worried about it being viral. I suppose I should call this idiot and get him to check his computer, then I'll chew his sorry butt out. :P;-)

Why??. 'cause that would make thier marketing expences pretty goddanm big - not to say astronomical.

Cheers for DK

And another thing!! Bill (back)Gates could have runned the experiment on an internal scale among his enployers in order to give them a bonus of some sort - why take it all the way around the world?? Or he could have set up the test in an african region and thus help out a lot of people who really needed it.

Not only is this a scam, it's an *old* scam. I first saw one of these years ago.

Oh boy, if this isn't a scam, then I'm Jesus. Oh wait.. I am

Yeah, I'm with Doyle, it's a scam. I had this go around about 3 years ago I think. Bloody annoying, everyone thinking, oh yeah! It might be real! Let's forward it on to everyone "just in case".

Oh, and it is viral. The people forwarding it on abviously have some sort of illness (I really hope you didn't forward it on to anyone).

Hell yeah it's a scam...

Let me put it like this, whenever you get an email asking you to do/delete/move/etc something, always assume that it's either a hoax or a scam.

I got it in portuguese once, i think it was a couple of years ago.

I've gotten it in Japanese a couple of times. The funny thing is that it was written like it was from a 90 year-old grandmother. :D

RE: Oh boy, if this isn't a scam, then I'm Jesus. Oh wait..

Wicked! I guess she used mostly Konji then? The funny thing is that I can read Konji(Kanji?), but I can't read katacana or hitakana(can't remember how to spell those). My Japanese speech is more limited these days since I don't hang out with my Japanese buddies anymore.

Anyway, just want to thank all of you helping me out in this Duh' matter. :)

Kind of odd since it's usually the other way around. Katakana and hiragana, "kana" to refer to both, are just the letters. Kanji is a LARGE "alphabet" assortment of characters that are a bitch to learn because they have various meanings depending upon where they are located, and then even have various cultural meanings that take literally decades to learn above most Euro languages.

RE: Oh boy, if this isn't a scam, then I'm Jesus. Oh wait..

Oh, yeah, briosafreak? Then maybe you should visit it more often. (hint, hint ;-) )

Well, Rosh, it isn't odd for me considering if you knew where the Japanese(and therefore Kanji) language came from. I speak/read/write that particular language fluently. Pop quiz:

What is this language I speak of?

:D:P

RE: Oh boy, if this isn't a scam, then I'm Jesus. Oh wait..

Considering you made a common mistake/dialect that many of those who learn one before the other, or who are root in one before the other, it's actually quite simple. Languages are a minor hobby of mine.

Konji is a phoenitic dialectization from Chinese, although from there I'm not too certain. Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. is all just Ogham to me. Wait, I know Ogham. :P

RE: Oh boy, if this isn't a scam, then I'm Jesus. Oh wait..

*Ding, Ding, Ding!!*

"You got it right!! And, why don't we tell him what he has won?"

"Nothing! That's right, nothing! Zero, zippo, kaput. Not even a single molecule."

*LOL*:D:P

Chinese is the correct answer. If you look back into the Japanese history far enough past, you'll find out that almost all of the Japanese culture and civilization is based upon the Chinese culture. Actually the Konji for Konji, literally means Chinese(Hon's) words/characters. But some of the Japanese Konji(Chinese characters) sometimes has no relevance/or bearing with the modern Chinese language at all. Since it was developed from early 17th/18th Chinese when they sended all the monks and scholars to learn the Chinese language/technology/etc. The official Chinese dialect is Mandarin - the imperial dialect(which is similar to the Beijing dialect where the Emperor resided). Anything other than that is just apples and oranges. The reason Cantonese is popular around north america is because of the many immigrants from the early gold rush days to the modern times are from the Canton prov. or Hong Kong.

As for my poor use of the English language, I usually blame it on the ESL programs or the brain injury. The problem with the ESL programs is not that they don't work, but it's because they usually work too well. The huge problem comes when it's time for the transition to take place for a ESLer to move up to the "regular" English programs. It's sometimes easy for a person to be stuck in a "ESL" mode. And for some unknown reason, as my English speech gets more fluent, my literacy skills drops.

But let's see if I can type this in English:

"Konbawa, watashiwa Ryu dezu, dozo uroshiku."

*LOL*
