Those Behind the Fallout

First time out of the vault
After more than a decade of its first release, Fallout franchise has more or less defined the 'Nuclear Post-Apocalypse' in the popular culture, left a mark on entire genre.

But since no one can imaging something out of nothing, Fallout itself is inspired by many earlier products, which many are long forgotten, sadly.
So, please list what you have noticed that may be the original inspiration of any Fallout component/s.

Wasteland (1988 Video Game): which is the common sense, no need to explain.

A Boy and His Dog (1975 Movie): also the common sense

Mad Max franchise (1970s&80s Movies): once again, the common sense, that's where we got our Sawed-Off Shotgun, Leather & Metal Armor designs, and why we have Dogmeat!

Postman (1985 Novel & 1997 Movie): inspiration of Fallout New Vegas, the protagonist is a Postman (Courier), main villain is a dictatorial general called Bethlehem (Caesar) who commands a massive army made by enslaved men, the location where the story took place is California and Nevada, Hoover Dam also appeared in the film.

Damnation Alley (1977 Movie): inspiration of Fallout New Vegas DLC Lonesome Road, in a post-apocalyptic world, where is full of irradiated storms and earthquakes, somewhere in California, an underground nuclear ballistic missile silo accidentally went off, protagonists follow a radio signal (ED-E signals) in the hope of finding a safe place, Las Vegas (New Vegas) appeared in the film, as well as Giant Scorpions (Radscorpions) and Killer Radroaches.

Feel free to add more 8-)

Indeed, Fallout 1's ending slides include one of the BoS that automatically got me thinking it was taken from the Space Marines. Newer conceptions of it got less WH 40K, IMO.

Dr bloodmoney

also ghouls are kind of similar to the vampires from i am legend i guess

Maybe there is a prior version that I'm not aware of, but I am legend with Will Smith is far newer than the first appearance of ghouls in Fallout.

I can see some connection to power armor inspiration between the T-15b Power Armor and the Mark VII Armour concept, just with a few noticable added tweaks to have the T-51b hold it's Fallout signature look. Also, T-45d Power Armor and Mark IV Armour seem to hold some striking similarities to each other in terms of helmet characteristics with, again, more noticable tweaks to give it its own signature look.

As for the Carapace Armour concept ideal, I think that standard combat armor would be closest in comparision to Flak Armour. Reinforced combat armor and its second varient would probably then come to look towards Carapace Armour.

So, bloodmoney->wasteland->fallout?

Also that book inspired two movies The Last Man on Earth (1964) and The Omega Man(1971).

Both are extremely watchable, IMO.

You can read about a lot of inspirations cited in a history of Fallout, as well as various dev profiles.

Interestingly they don't seem to have too much inspiration from '50s post-apocalyptic films, like 1951's Five, 1959's On the Beach and The World, the Flesh and the Devil. Some pretty interesting films/concepts...

Not to mention 1936's Things to Come

THINGS_TO_COME-0.jpg

Bladerunner - .223 Pistol design and probably more...

Hard Boiled - 10mm pistol design

Terminator - whole SAD and skynet thingie.

A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller. It's the story of a Catholic monastery preserving knowledge and technology in the post-deluge future.
I'm sure it forms some of the inspiration for Warhammer's Space Marines and Fallout's Brotherhood of Steel.

And for the abbey in Fallout 2. It was dropped from vanilla, though.
