FALLOUT 3 SUGGESTIONS and COMMENTS - FEEL FREE TO FLAME
=============================================
Here's what is in my mind:
There needs to be a lot of references to the old F1 and F2 games. F2 did a very good job of this and managed to even include old comrades in a random encounter.
I have no doubt in Bethesda's ability to maintain the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system as well as the conversation tree. I think they will do well if they keep the FMV like faces during conversation too. A lot of the feel for a character came from knowing what they looked and sounded like. You could almost feel the texture of skin for some of them.
They also need to keep the comrade system working well. I know there were a ton of things to do before you even had a friend to cover your behind. So it wasn't far too trivial if you dumped them (some would disagree). The EMOTIONAL attachment is what kept them around. I mean, I tried healing Dogmeat 1000x before I finally gave up. It was those bastard energy shields near the endgame that ended his career as a well fed body guard. It hurt me twice as bad as it did him.
Another thing they have to keep is the isometric view. I have no doubt that they will. With the new engine I bet they'll have a zoom feature too (PLEASE!).
Turn-based fun is what really made combat unique. I played as a diplomat most of the time, but I had no fear to drop the robes and lift the minigun. The balance of combat was REALLY well done in both the originals and this is the part where I am worried.
Although that's not where my worry ends. No no, my worry is with the story. I mean, what's better than writing a story by playing a game. By the end of it everyone has a similar novel with a different character. Bathesda is well known for going a little light on the story but I think the project is in good hands.
Now for the most demanding part of a writers job: COMEDY! Dear baby Jesus please don't let those bastards turn Fallout 3 into a "I wish I were funny." cliche crapbasket!
Almost done here,
A lot of people compare the Ultima series and how it went wrong with 9. Ultima 8 was the shit wasn't it? Nod your head... thank you. Ultima 8 was just a graphically superior, well written, sandbox-style, kick-ass sequel to 7 (not to mention they were both ISOMETRIC).
I think that the 50's style of art and decor needs to be recaptured and that there need to be a lot more items. Everyone wants fancy cars and shiz, I think the way that the car was incorporated into F2 was done very well.
The booklets were oh-so-splendid pieces of gaming lore never to be lost within the Fallout fanboys essential survival kits. I loved the way EVEN THE BOOKLET was written. Now that's good stuff!
Just do well, that's all I ask.
P.S. - I've never played Fallout Tactics, but then again they were still under Origin/Black Isle at that time... I think.
P.S.S. - This is my first post.
