Todd Howard at DICE

TyloniusFunk

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Here's a Gamasutra story covering Todd's address at the '09 DICE.

Displaying the same insight and depth found in our near and dear Fallout 3, he opines "Great games are played, not made" and, shock, quality is proportional to development time. Perhaps explaining his palpable weakness, he asserts "We have a very low asshole quotient in the studio. Egos don't work. Everybody has to respect each other." NMA:Glittering Gems of Hatred::Beth:Puffy Pillows of Respect?

This guy should really stop trying to be smart. He's only making himself look worse.

If playtesting is so important to him, then why did Oblivion have 1300 bugs, and Fo3 even more?

He should stop being involved in making games and go back only to play them like a simple gamer.

Gotta love Todd.
He is as funny as G.W.Bush was.
Seriously, is he supposed to be a gaming "professional" ?

Hey...what would happen if Uwe Boll made film about oblivion, while Todd would be helping him ?

The fun thing is that Fallout 3 shares some of the same bugs that were already present in Oblivion ...

That's probably because they didn't liesten to the fans.

God! That would be so funny :D

It would be even more funny, if Toddy turns out to be his fan

This really needs to go to the public. I hate this elitist behaviour so much, don't you agree? I suggest we all spread this story to as many people as possible...

Not that I'm really in the position to make demands, seen as it's my third post and I bought Fallout 1 and 2 because I loved the setting in Fallout 3, but ye know, I DO agree :P

I have never seen someone write a 7500 word complaint about a video game in their free time. Seriously, it doesn't help and makes fans of the original Fallouts seem like pretentious assholes. To a passing reader it just looks like, "I hate Fallout 3 and I think you're a douchbag for liking it! I'm a very intellectual person so you should definitely listen to me! If that didn't convince you, maybe this overly verbose and ultimately pointless argument about Bethesda dumbing down The Elder Scrolls series will!"

Ok.. I've been online playing FPSs and MMOs long enough to learn at least some basic 'Elitist Assholian' which is the native language of Tard Howdumb and I believe what that "phrase" (I use the term lightly) boils down to meaning is this.

Before:
"Great games are played, not made"

After Attempted Translation:
"If a game is popular it is good, even if its poorly put together"

-------

Its one of the more asinine statements hes made in a while, I can attest to the fact he is wrong, some of the best video games have a very low sell rate, often times a very low print number too. Here are a few examples just from the Playstation 2:

Okami, The Original Katamari Damacy, Zone of the Enders, REZ, Disgaea, Godhand, Guitaroo Man. (btw I own all of these games, except Okami which I loaned to a co-worker and never got back, which pisses me off since I bought it release day... but w/e)

All of these games are VERY good games, some more than others, some of them are full of problems in terms of bugs or graphical abilities (Godhand to name one) however they are very good. However they didn't sell very well, Katamari and prob ZOE being the most popular of the two, each selling I believe under 1mill in their total lifetime.

----------

As for Todd working with Uwe Boll on an Oblivion movie and "how funny/cool/ect that would be" DON'T EVEN THINK IT, remember there is a Fallout movie on IMDB and a number of the people who are working on it have worked with Uwe Boll in the past....
