Trouble Activating K-9

Canis

First time out of the vault
I've got the worst luck with dogs in these games. In Fallout 1, I never could get Dogmeat to follow me beyond his original little area of Junktown, and now, for the second game in a row, I can't figure out how to activate K-9 at the Navarro base.

I've got the motivator, but I can't see how to use it on the dog. I've tried quickslotting it and then using it with the little yellow target, and I've tried using it on him with the little, um, you know, you hold down the left mouse button and then choose the hand icon and you can choose something from your inventory to use on the target. I've also tried using my science and repair skills on him, and even planting the motivator on him with the steal skill. No luck.

I'm out of ideas. Could somebody please tell me what glaringly obvious thing I'm missing here?

I've had some problems when using the 'holding down the left mouse botton and choosing the hand' thingy. It seems like sometimes the game then ignores the list of objects, and just say: You see a Wall, or whatever was behind the object you try to choose.
Still, by quickslotting the item it should work...
I don't see any other thing that would cause your problem, other than double checking that you use the right motivator. But i guess u've already done that :P

Yeah.... I actually got so desperate that I tried both the motivator and the motor that looks just like it, just to be sure. No matter what I try, the motivator stays in my inventory, the dog gives me the "you are not my master" routine, and the dog's description continues to indicate that he's disabled.

Oh, and I was mistaken, it wasn't the little hand icon I was using but rather the little backpack icon. You know, the one you use when you want to use/transfer/whatever something in your inventory on/to/whatever something else. Just to be clear. :)

Driving me nuts, this whole thing.

Hmmm

I had almost the exact same problem! I kept clicking and trying everything, but it didn't work. Eventually, in frustration, I killed the scientist, and talked to the dog. It asked 'Are you my new master?' so I said Yes, and it asked me to install the part, and It worked. If you haven't killed the guy, the part doesn't work, if you have, then I'm out of ideas too, sorry. Hope this is helpful

P.s. Remember to close the door, even though the room is soundproof, if the door is open, the guards come a running...

Ooooooooo cool! It worked! Thanks! :D

In Fallout 1, I finally got Dogmeat to join me by resorting to wearing a leather jacket. Joy! Previously I'd only tried feeding him. I just have rotten luck when it comes to using items on critters, I guess.

Good, good. You know how long it took me to figure that out though? It look like a month, and I was so close to giving up. I was lucky I suppose...

I've got the same problem . I think it depends of science or repair skill. But somehow I figure the problem.I'm sure u don't want that dog in your party, and the experience u gained is not so much. Markus is what everyone need, and you've got to see him with bozar.

I don't know, I think I had pretty high repair and science at the time. In the 70s at least. Did they need to be higher?

And yes, I did indeed want that dog in my party. If Marcus is a dog then I want him too; if not then I really can't be bothered. :)

No Marcus isn't a dog. He's a mutant. The worst of all is that I can't
remember how I activate it. I've do that and I'm not sure how, but the dog is a good fellow, and do a lot of damage to humans, daethclaws and all of living creatures, but none to enclave patrols.

Does anyone know whether this motor (the one from Navarro vertibird hanger) is actually used for something?

but there were two - one was the K-9 motivator, and another one was described as a "40- HP electric motor" and I couldn't find any use for it throughout the game (neither in Navarro nor SAD)

Back on topic, the bonus of having dogs as your party is that they don't burst fire you in the back. Of course you caould just give them single shot only guns (The people, not the dogs).

Per mentions it as 'Motor (Navarro)' in the list 'Items which have no known use'.
