Ubidays 08

First time out of the vault
Ubisoft's game conference, Ubidays, has started today (this is the second one so far, i believe), and a whole bunch of new information has cropped up on their upcoming games. Personally, i think that Ubisoft publishes quite a few shit games, and some of this looks like vomit (such as a Shaun White snowboarding game and a DS game that... helps you quit smoking), but there are a couple of promising titles on the horizon.

out of all the games talked about, the one that has me excited is Farcry 2, mostly because it is promised that it will have nothing to do with the other Farcry games (other than an open-world setting), but also because i think the sandbox-style shooter has a lot of potential, especially when it comes to replay. There are side quests, warring factions that you can choose to all yourself with, and a friend system that allows you to make friends with NPCs who will help you out when you're in need (whom you contact by phone, like GTAIV).

the new Prince of Persia sounds pretty interesting, too, but I stopped playing the Prince of Persia games when they decided to include a soundtrack consisting of Godsmack guitar loops.

with all the summer game conferences coming up, including the Sony one that just recent passed, is there anything planned to come out this year that you are looking forward to?

Far Cry 2, is going to suck.

Crysis looked much more promising in the previews, and even that was a mediocre game that was more of an engine/graphics demonstration than anything else.

:\

i thought Crysis was pretty crappy. Farcry 2 probably isn't going to blow me away, but it has nothing to do with Crysis or any of the Farcry games, which is great when you think of the fact that there were xbox spin-offs involving "feral powers" and a wii version involving graphics and gameplay that was already outdated by Goldeneye for the N64.

i'm not holding my breath or anything, but i will most certainly try it out, though i'll probably be going the pirate route for that. i think it'll be better than most crap slated to come out this year, which to me looks like a whole long list of nothing, other than maybe Spore and Left 4 Dead. That reminds me, part of me seems to have a strong urge to slap whoever decided to put the number 4 in the name, it reminds me of Shadowman: 2econd Coming or something.

i don't think that Crysis was necessarily terrible, it was just very shallow and overall very dull. sure, the graphics are incredible, the sense of destruction can be fun to toy with, and the overall CRYengine is very good. the main problem is that there simply isn't much to the game other than the tech demo aspect: you might be amazed at what you see, but if this game had been put on any other engine, you probably would've have much of a reason to boot it up a second time.

gameplay is shallow (with a suit that makes it virtually impossible to die on anything but the hardest difficulty), weapon selection seems very small (from what i've played, i don't own a computer that can run it but i spent a few hours on my roommate's computer), and any attempts at a story seem laughable at best. i have heard that the multiplayer is a lot of fun, which comes as a surprise to me, but i haven't actually seen or read much about it. i guess that if you have a computer that can run it, it wouldn't be a bad idea for interesting eye candy (the environment looks stunning), but it certainly left a lot to be desired.

That is a shame that the story is so shallow to play.
I really like how the environment looks like but good gameplay is important too.

Oddly enough I had more fun with Farcry then Crysis. But I do think Crysis wasn't complete failure. The start was slow, but in middle the pace was okay with variety of different mission types. The suit and weapon upgrade system was good, better then the one in Vegas 2. But Crysis was short, cant say same about Farcry.

Edit. About Prince of Persia, Id say im more interested in that then Farcry 2. If they can pull of Legacy of Kain level storyline that would be great. Original was addicting, Sands was meh, Warrior was good & Throne so and so.
