Gamereactor TV interviewed Pete Hines at Ubidays. They talk about the character creation/birth, the humour. Pete explains how the perception and compass works:<blockquote>Every SPECIAL that you have, all your attributes...your strength determines how much stuff you can carry amongst other things, your agility is how many action points you get to spend in VATS mode, your perception determines when you're walking around you have a little compass - it's pretty subtle in the corner - that gives you a general idea in which direction you're heading, you also get little indicators that let you know if there're other people nearby or enemies nearby and how far away your compass picks those people up is dependent on your perception. So if you give yourself a really high perception you're going to be able to detect people and things much further away, whereas if it's very low or lower you won't be able to detect them until you're much closer up. So it does give the player and advantage based on what the character is doing, and that's the whole idea, we want every thing in the game to be impacted by your character and his/her stats and attributes and not just you as the player, what it is you can do while you're playing the game.</blockquote>Then they discuss bringing such a system into a FPS game, into a "different game from the original Fallout" [interviewer quote].

Dude, take the hot blonde chick out of your sig.
I mean to read your posts, I honestly do, but I just get distracted by hot... blonde... chick...

Ahem, anyhoo, regarding the news piece, not much that hasn't been said before, although I'm interpreting it as Bethesda abusing the Perception stat in order to squeeze their much maligned quest compass in through a back door.

Well, for some reason people kept getting mystified about the compass. I've explained it a few times in the same words Pete uses here, albeit I wasn't sure about the influence of perception.

Let's hope it's cleared up now.

all sounds pretty good to me, nothing to moan about i guess.

The "hot blonde chick" looks like a holland fan, i picked that up with my expert detective skills! and the dutch kit behind her, and the fact shes wearing orange...and the dutch flag is painted on her face.

Holland are doing great in the euros, im supporting them...come on Van Persie!!

I didn't quite read it like that, to me it seems that Perception will only be tied to this enemy-detection function, not the compass itself. Note how Pete first says that it "gives you a general idea in which direction you're heading", then procceeds to stating that it shows nearby enemies and "how far away your compass picks those people up is dependent on your perception".

Still, I bet this compass of theirs will work like the one in Oblivion and not simply point north. Which kinda makes me wish they would tie it to any stat, just so I could dump it to a bare minimum and get rid of all the hand-holding.

Nothing really terrible here, at least. I still don't see what would be so good about being born into the game, though
