UFO: Alien Invasion

I spotted over at RPGCodex that they posted about a new strategy game ala X-Com, now sure this isn't your average Fallout news but alot of the Fallout fans do love the old X-Com series (well before the third of course). Here are some info about the game:
UFO: ALIEN INVASION is a strategy game featuring tactical combat against hostile alien forces which are about to infiltrate earth at this very moment. You are in command of a small special unit which has been founded to face the alien strike force. To be successful on the long run, you will also have to have a research team study the aliens and their technologies in order to learn as much as possible about their technology, their goals and the aliens themselves.
And it doesn't look that bad either...

Cool. The graphics look kinda...simplistic, though.

The shareware aspect seems interesting. I would like to keep up on the development. Think you can get them to give you an interview?

Well, in a way. Although if they do bring back the UFO feel (US residents are often a bit naive on how UFO was the international title for X-COM), then it would be very good. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

They could start by avoiding many things made in ufo aftermath, it was kind of a deception.

You're right, it definitly needs that ufo defense / terror from the deep feel again, i sure miss that.

Oh! Oh! :)

That looks neat :D

I have to agree with Teatime too (I seem to be doing that an aweful lot lately) I just hope they translate things better than you find in Japaneese console games.

All your base are belong to us... :?

Heard about that one before quite a while ago...
I dunno... as far as I can remeber, 99.5% of all fanmake projects..
they just didn't worked out so good.

anyway... good luck to them, they'll need it

Like I've been saying - and others - the PC games are now going to come from europe, not america. Let's hope they just sort the translations out soon.

Very true and I've thought the same thing for a while now.

The thing is, war and strategy games are more popular in europe than they are in either the US or Japan. Hence, more strategy games get the green light in Europien firms.

Take a look at Silent Storm, it brings back many X-com and JA2 memories. No way would a US game company (garage developers might do it) give the go-ahead for a turn based game like that.

www.csvc.de To be honest with y

I pretty much like ufo aftermath even if it is only half the game it could have been- still a nice try and you can check out anytime you like save the game and return anytime to your last move in game- which game offers this ?

That's not exactly a new thing, and it is used by many in the tactical genre, all the way from X-COM to JA2, to Fallout, although Fallout 2 gives serious issues when saving during combat and hence why it isn't a good idea.

They're using the Quake2 engine. That's odd. Means they've either paid a decent whack for licensing or their project is going to have to be released under the GPL.

Cool! Good thing it's turn based, there is just too many realtime games out there, I use a laptop with the stock pointer device. I just can't manipulate fast games very well with it.

I'm kinda worried about not being able to hunt ufo's though, I actually liked shooting them down in X-Com.

Yeah, I liked downing the UFOs too :( And possibly no base management either. Seems like they are doing some of the same "dumb down" moves that people have complained about in UFO:Aftermath. But I'll be happy if they at least finish something. I need a proper X-Com fix as bad as I need a Fallout one :)

I don't mind the dumbing down of some things, but they're keeping the actual squad based combat very similar, and I think that's great, seeing as how I can't seem to get the original to run properly.

Yeah... But aftermath lacked a proper strategic game too.
Only things that were "challenging" was to pick the optimum equipment for every mission.
I wish that there's a some kind of a strategic portion in Alien invasion

This project looks interesting; I'll have to keep an eye on it.

@Dove: I'm not quite sure what could be dumbed down from the first two UFOs, the game mechanics are pretty simple for a quick off. I guess that's what makes them so enjoyable: an interface that's not fiddly, accessible gameplay, plus the great aliens, ships, weapons, etc.
I'd love to see Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep redone, or even combined (it always felt a bit silly to me that the subs were totally destroyed when they crashed on land).
For running the old UFOs, you might try DosBox at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net.
