Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines

So I just DLed this game (paid for, from Direct2Drive), mostly because of this thread-- although I have to take it to another room to play it on my PC. There should be more #)$(* games for macs...

well, don't forget to get the patches. very important.

other than that: lean back & enjoy the ride...

Good for you. Like Sue said, get the patches, and prepare to be dazzled.

Yeah, get the patches FIRST! Screw bug fixing but the engine is mostly crappy, getting high fps without fan patches is almost impossible.

The first 80% or so of VTMB is great, I really enjoyed it. The end is a pointless linear killfest and was boring. Overall the game is still worth playing, though.

Oh, shit. I think this version is already patched?

Maybe not, cause it crashes... alot. Is it going to screw up my game if I patch it now, after playing for a couple hours?

i'm guessing Direct2Drive already applied the official patches but there is no way to be sure.

since Troika went bankrupt, those patches were never really enough and the fan community took over. you really should get the fanmade patches (either the fix or the edited version).

it's a lot better...

as for saves? i dont know, read the readme? :)

When I tried to install the patch, a message said that the game was a newer version, so I'm guessing all the patches are installed.

I'm playing a Malk female stealth/spy type, the dialog options are pretty hillarious sometimes, and sometimes I have no idea wtf I'm saying. Since their perception is already high I invested some in Ranged, but so far, it's not very helpful. Guess I have to wait for the better guns.

This game is addicting! It's not that easy either, since you can't just level up mindlessly until no enemies are a challenge. The sidequests don't feel like fed ex missions either. The story is done really well (and now I see how much better F3 would have been..)

btw how do you get the console to come up? Just hitting the ~ doesn't do it.

I too wanted to play stealth/spy character but making pure spy is impossible...
There's one reason why- boss fights. Seriously, you need to invest some skill points in ranged or meele weapons... I tried meele and it was pretty sweet and I think the best meele weapon has a nice kick though I've never got it when I played

well, that's why it's best playing with a normal char first.

anyhow, i always considered Malkavian and Nosferatu as extras. not really 'first try' characters because they can get pretty confusing.

you first need to edit your shortcut to something like this:
Code:
"M:\Games\Activision\Vampire - Bloodlines\vampire.exe" -console
but dont use the console ingame. go to the menu first. it can be dodgy and sometimes doesnt go back up for some people if you use it ingame. so bring up the menu first.

stealth + melee is pretty kickass :)
the stealthkill animations can get pretty retarded (in a funny way as they arent stealthy at all if the corpse flies through the room and smacks into the wall on the other side).

and most bosses can be beaten with guns, although not all. so yeah, invest into some melee.

Thanks SuAside...

Yeah I probably should have started with a normal character, but after the first few conversations it was too damn fun. And melee is pretty great..

you mean rescueing the professor (or not)

near the end? not really...

sure the patch is installed correctly btw? the first patch made by troika was made to fix that exact bug...

anyhow, google it. you'll find a console command that allows you to enable or disable rescue of the professor and make the next level load correctly. (i remember i had to do this when i played the game for the first time, before the patches were released)

Both way...
If I not rescuing it he follow anyway

Still have some quest to do but most have been done; your right.

For the patch it's the official or unofficial patch your talking?
And for the console, have sub bug when I use it --> Like I think you said; the game freeze, have to reload...

Are you remembering this command?

you couldve sucked him dry in the dialog. or even now. but that's a waste of time.

the first official patch fixes this crashbug. or should have. afaik it did for everyone?

as for the console thing, be sure to use it from the menu, not from ingame (press esc)

after 2 minutes of google:

The game chrashes when escaping the Society of Leopold. This is how
you solve it at the current time.
The following can be found on Activision's official site:

We are still looking into this issue at the current time, but the following
should get you past the issue.

This fix involves using some console commands. Be careful to enter the
console commands exactly as
they appear, capitalization is important.

To enable the console for the game:
1) Right-click on the shortcut you use the launch the game
2) Select properties
3) Make sure you are on the shortcut tab
4) At the end of the target line add -console, add this outside of the quotes
5) The finished line should look like this if you have the game installed to
the default directory
"C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire - Bloodlines\vampire.exe" -
console
6) Hit ok, make sure you launch the game using this shortcut

Once you have enabled the console load the saved game from this level
and do the following
1) Get to the boat and approach it, do not get into the boat, but get as close
as you can
2) Open the console using the tilde "~" key
3) Type the following commands in:
If you saved Johansen:
SaveJohansen()

Then to level transition if you're anybody but a Nosferatu:
changelevel2 la_hub_1 taxi_landmark

And if you're a Nosferatu, instead use:
changelevel2 la_hub_1 sewer_map_landmark

4) If you get to the next level and you do not have any items in your
inventory reload your previous save
(make sure you have a discreet save and are not just using the autosave)
and try it again, but stand
closer to the boat.

Yes. Yes, it is. Get it. It fixes a lot.

Ok thx... it's quite a big patch by the way... the last patch it's like 230 meg!!
But I will try both option, -console and if not working unofficial patch.

(My CD's are scratch so I have to use the no-cd for the 1.02 version  )

I cannot say enough how amazing this game is. (I know, welcome to 2004, bitch.) I'm actually interested in the conversations with NPCs. This is the first game since Resident Evil that has enough of a creepiness factor in some levels to make me actually jump outta my seat. Then again, I'm not much into the Horror genre and I'm sure there are other games that I missed in the last few years. Anyway... A+! fin.
