Van Buren designer docs

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I've recently stumbled upon these priceless documents on the web (they are, of course, are present here on NMA, too) and after searching for a while, I would ask: why nobody would want to use them in their Fallout mods? It is obvious, these docs are so deeply detailed, in fact they could be used to build a decent new Fallout TC mod in itself, using any available editor!

So, why is it not used?

Firstly because ideas are cheap and work is hard. Anyone who'd be willing to put in the energy to make a mod of that size would probably be willing to bring their own plots and ideas to the table rather than work to realize someone else's.

Secondly because anyone can read them. If you make a game in accordance with them, it won't hold any surprises. To the extent that you deviate from them, you undermine the point of using them in the first place.

Why slave away only to end up being judged on how well you manage to hold to someone else's vision?

I thought about it, Per.

However, in my point of view, these docs could be used to tailor out the locations, minor quests, some NPCs, and all that "less interesting" but most arduous and voluminous work, that any TC mod entails. As for the main plot - it could be made from a scratch (not the most difficult part). And secondly, the desgner docs could be amended in some way (to keep the surprise), some details could be added/removed, but anyway these docs could save a whole lot time, if used as the basis.

IMHO, of course.

BGE uses them, well, in a certain way. Things like small ideas, small scraps that shouldn't be forgotten. But complete areas or even entire plot? Nope - mainly because of reasons that has been already mentioned by Per. Modders are usually quite proud and assuming Van Buren = not only taking up its design docs, but the finished texts too. Weird situation and, well, not too motivating. It might look a bit immoral, too. Not mentioning that a lot of Van Buren things is very hard to make (programming & graphics); how the hell you want to work up eg. Denver / Dog City in fo2mapper? Get an extra alternative life.

Anyway, I don't think that the docs are so goddamn well-known that might be even spoiling the game experience. Partly because it's quite hard English read, partly because people are basically lazy as hell.

So, picking the Van Buren's corpse? Maybe. Total exhumation? No fucking way.

I wouldn't say it's immoral. Au contraire , it's like picking up the standard from the hands of the fallen.

Still, I think, if I manage to find some suitable platform to apply these docs to, I think it'll be a good try.
