Van Buren: Is it Canon?

Mr Krepe

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
I know this is a small question for a topic, but could you consider Van Buren as canon. As I always have, but didn't really know if I was right, I think it would be great if it were canon as i've just read more into Van Buren and to be honest it's better than what would happen if FO2 and FOTactics made babies, so what would you say?

Okay, I wish it was canon though great story, and amazing detail. BUt potentially an amazing game.

4 existing Fallout CRPG are canon.

Because the Vault says so?

That said, official "canon" is whatever Bethesda says is canon, and that's what the Vault reproduces. Van Buren itself isn't canon at all, but whatever was reproduced of it for New Vegas and Fallout 3 is.

If you want to hang on some kind of fanon, including ignoring Fallout 3 wholesale, that's always a fan's prerogative. But hey, official canon is official canon.

I simply agree with that. Officially F3 is canon.
Van Buren is semi-canon.

But really there are only three canon games: F1, F2, NV. :)

Erghhm, even though I can agree that FO3's canon is a bit dodgy, it is canon because it was a published game and is technically part of the main series of games, although I would love to agree with you.

Wait, are you joking or not?

Well there's not much to discuss in that whoever owns the games and is producing sequels determines canon. So whatever appears in Fallout 3 or New Vegas from Tactics or Van Buren is canon (the term semi-canon is kinda meaningless here), while they seem to ignore BoS and other products.

But when it comes to "canon" as in "if I'm writing a fanfic or making a mod what do I base it on", then it's always fan preference. There's a lot of inconsistencies in the series right from game 1 onwards, so I can understand picking and choosing your way through.

How does it come that everyone is going yadda-yadda about canon in the last few weeks? Nobody cared about it for a long time...

The Universe is changing. :)

Canon really only matters when someone is making something and making decisions about what to base decisions on. At all other times it's intangible and largely undefinable.
