5 types of vehicles seems a bit much...

does that include the trainz?
Motorcycle w/ sidecar
Dune buggy
Cop car
Semi w/ trailer
Train

There were pros and cons to each vehicle. The motorcycle was fast, but it could only carry three people and couldn't go on severe terrain. Semi w/ trailer could carry all the other vehicles (well, except the train), but consumed huge fuel, wasn't that fast, and could only go on two types of terrain. The train could only follow intact tracks.

The cop car r0x0r5! Really, it did. Was my fav, at least.

There`s a good example.

I didn`t like the idea of vehicles (except for flash gordon type of shuttles), with maybe except for the train, but it still colided with the further decay of the world that was intended.

I like the helmets though:
A lot of the open-face motorcycle helmets had unique
designs. Flames, an Eightball, a giant Eye, a skull
design, and a variety of different colors are what I
remember. The leather jackets could have the radiation
symbol, an oriental dragon, skull and crossbones, a
Harley-Davidson type deal, and one or two others.

And here are the vehicles, courtesy of kumquatq3:

- Motorcycle + sidecar: Fast, fuel efficient. Could be
upgraded with a machine gun on the sidecar, resulting
in less random encounters. Carries three people.

- Police car: Fast. Could be upgraded with a blower,
making it the fastest vehicle in the game. Carries 6
people.

- Semi: Slow, burns through energy cells quickly. An
old camper could be hooked up to it, resulting in a
mobile science/mechanic lab for the PC, as well as
near-infinite storage capacity. Carries 6 people.

- Dune buggy: Medium speed, not slowed down by rough
terrain like the other vehicles. Could be upgraded
with bigger tires, allowing you to cross areas that
the other vehicles can't. Held 4 people, I think.

I suppose we could be realistic and have un-oiled firearms across the wasteland rust closed and all the ammunition expire, but I wouldn't guess most players would find that to be particularly interesting or fun. I'm sure some people would like that, but I don't think they would be in the majority, even here. Even so, a modern car or motorcycle with a non-combustion engine would probably survive for a long time fairly intact if it weren't placed in harm's way.

These vehicles were single, stand-alone items that could be repaired to a functioning level of operation; there certainly weren't loads of dudes cruising around on motorcycles or in cop cars. I certainly understand the desire to make society feel like it's falling apart, but I don't personally think that the Fallout world was intended to be physically/metaphysically entropic like the homeworld of the Last Gunslinger.

Also, I think one of the unique leather jackets you could find in the game had a Khans logo on it. Tom and I talked about putting the Corley Motors logo on instead of the quasi-Harley logo, but we were afraid of being sued to death by Lucas.

OT, but J.E., why the avatar change? Something in the works?
Nope, just changed it for kix.

Ok, those sound cool (particularly the semi) but i think you just posted that to throw us off the tracks with the dinossaur business.

I don't see much trouble with that, just make them hard enough to acquire (you know, repairing and stuff, just assume that it's now "reapairable" because of the gradual recovery of knowledge) and i think it could be good enough.

Acquiring the vehicles themselves could have been a part of a larger sidequest. Say for instance there's a junk-hoarder in a town that's acquired manuals on the repair and maintenance of electric vehicles. This wouldn't matter much until at some point the character comes across a repairable vehicle and notices that it's repairable depending on their repair or science skill. Going back and asking the fellow for the manuals would start a quest to get some junk that he wanted in exchange for the manuals.

Yeah, I gotta agree that, if done right, the vehicles could fit it.

After all, the bible states that the car/pple ratio is like 1/200.

Plus, they can't even spell Sulik correctly.

They can't spell "Kurisu," either.

The rocket didn't count as a vehicle as you couldn't steer it, it was a plot device.

Mine, too.

The cars were one of the most fun parts of the game add-ons for VB, IMO. Just the mechanics of getting them working, providing fuel, and their limitations added a lot to the game, especially as the map was VERY BIG and you needed the vehicles to get anywhere in a (game-)timely manner.

I wish I hadn't lost my render of the four vehicles, they all looked very good and very 50's, especially the camper for the semi.

So was it like one of those 50's shiny stainless steal campers or something ?

And I wish you hadnt lost your render of it, too :P

Heh, Ill do that.

Damn though, Bethesda's FO3 is going to be fucking hard to be good, with the sahdow of Van Buren over it

Wait a second. Didn't Briosafreak say that the Semi's trailer could carry all of the vehicles?

Exactly what kind of truck and trailer were in the game?

I don`t think i said that:

Edit: The guy that did the litlle piece on Van Buren for PCZone talked to me to go through the details, and it`s my fault Sulik and Kurisu had the names wrong, i`m sorry folks, don`t blame him.

I wondered if there was some Dark Tower fandom going on in one of the towns being called 'New Canaan'.

While i can't say i exactly like all those vehicules, i am somewhat fond of the train. I wouldn't expect the PC to be able to drive it trough the wastelands, though; i was more looking at the train as a possibility of it being used by nomads to cross trough the wasteland (something akin to Wasteland's Rail Nomads), with a concept similar to the Tanker Vagrants of Fallout 2.

Actually, it wouldn't be your fault either

It woulda been real nice to see some Vertibirds in VanBuren...It's all just a dream now.

Really makes me wish that Beth would just buy VanBuren...finish it.. and release it... Then make their OWN Fallout. They might as well call theirs Fallout 4, cause the only real Fallout 3 is VanBuren IMO.
