Vault Boy / Pip Boy / Fallout Boy...

cratchety ol joe

Mildly Dipped
soo, I picked up a PC magazine (in itself an odd act as I usually despise mainstream media...) after reading through (and finding many a quote along the lines of "Fallout 3, its great buy it now" I dismissed this vicious lies, read some of the other articles and was prepared to close up and throw it out when.. lo..

I was confronted by various images of our beloved Pip, the page was titled "Rejected Fallout 3 Perks" have a ganders if you want I'm going to post the lot of em on a page for you all to see...

here's one of the collection:

He's not Pip-Boy, he's Vault Boy.

Tbh, in all my years enjoying Fallout, I've never actually known by which name the character went by, so my humble thanks!

and now I must go and hide my shame at not actually knowing.

at least it wasnt just me that was a little confused, I'm on par with the writer of the FO Bible! (I usually refer to him as Fallout Boy... being that his image is synonymous with the Fallout series) but again, thanks for helping clear my fuzzy little head of any doubt.

These perks are a lot more fun than those in-game IMO. At least there's *some* humour in them.

Haha, some of them were pretty darn good. Should've had at least one or two of those in the game, as cookies or something. Would be asolutely hilarious (although Beth would probably butcher them anyway).

I have a question that I can not find an answer for.

Is it explained somewhere why there is Vaultboy everywhere in PipBoy 3000, when it was made by RobCo and not VaultTec?

Is it because VaultTec chose RobCo to make it, licensed it to them so they could use it?

Or did VaultTec buy RobCo after making PipBoy 2000, therefore using VaultBoy there as a conscious decision?

Or am I just making shit up? I would just like to have it cannonically explained, is all.

From the demonstration Vault in the Museum of Technology:

Did you know -- the Vault-Tec/RobCo partnership is considered the most successful joint venture in the history of American industry?

The 3000 Pip-Boy model was likely produced under this joint-venture, and the 2000 model was likely made before it.

If you limit yourself to the canonical games, FO and FO2, you'll see there are no Vault Boy pics in the Pip Boy. There are Vault Boy pics in the character creation screen, but that's not part of the Pip Boy.

Bethesda fucked up and therefore came with the "explanation" of a Vault-Tec/RobCo partnership. Gawd, I hate them.

I know, and it was called Lil' Pip 3000 or something.

That was probably even worse.

The Vault City central computer refers to it as the Pip Boy:

"A small window opens on the terminal screen with a smiling Pip Boy next to it..."
