Video game endings that don't suck

Destructoid has an article up about video game endings that don't suck...Fallout is in:
This ending is great in a few ways. It creates an emphatic exclamation point to the main point of the game - that the world humans live in after the fallout is a very harsh and unforgiving place. You have risked your life to save everyone else, a perfect example of a good role model, yet for this act of altruism you are sentenced to live in the way that you were so fervently trying to prevent your fellow vault members from being sucked into. This is also further expanding the hardships that a truly heroic person must experience. Its not a cheap "try real hard then you'll have a happy ending" type of atmosphere. This shows the excruciatingly severe consequences that can come from a realistic world, rather than a world of hugs and kisses.

And, of course, it is good for the developer as well, as even though it is a "sad" ending, it is not merely done by killing off the main character. Because of the ending leaving the main character alive it allows for sequels that still have to do with the main character.

And, although it has multiple endings, it’s pretty rough on the hero when the best ending is that the protagonist is sent into exile in a radioactive land. Each of the endings reinforces the main "point" of the game, that the nuclear fallout has created an unforgiving world that no human being would want to be part of.
Link: video game endings that don't suck pt. 2 on Destructoid.

I always thought the point was that the overseer was a dick head, I wanted to blast him real good after watching that ending. I had to keep selling him out to Lou so I could watch super mutants beat him.

cool, and there are no witnesses, they should expand the mod so you can frame up ian for it and then become the new overseer....

Yea if you break under the stand of the torture of being beat down by lou and tell him where the vault is I think you get dipped and then it cuts to the scene of vault 13 getting over run with super mutants and overseer is sitting his fat butt in his fancy chair shooting away at them and eventualy a super mutie climbs up and clubs him... ohhh maybe its the player after he got dipped :)

Well I my first play through Fallout, I had the bloody mess perk. I was privilaged enough to see his crippled ass try to crawl back into the vault with his guts falling out as he crawled.
But, in terms of story and how the ending turned out, kind of ended on a down note. Wich I like.
Like how Empire Strikes Back ended. Such a down note but my favorite.

I remember when I first saw the ending (I had the bloody mess so it was auto) I was shocked, but in a good way. The ending was so unconventional for a game it just hit me so hard when I tore the overseer up with my FMJ pistol.

Quite a good selection. I hoped Bloodmoney was there, and was not disappointed. FO1's ending is definitely a classic, not many games have the guts to leave you on a low deliberately. My only wish in FO was that you could plant some C4 and cause a cave in, if they want to be isolationist - why not help them? :P

VTM:B had some similarly bleak endings, but the execution was a bit shoddy.

shoddy? most V:tM-B endings were actually pretty good. (with a few winks here & there)

My problem was more that the run up spoilt them somewhat (the last quarter of the game was horribly rushed). It also didn't help that the animation and scripting were so very buggy, when I did it the voices were out of synch and Le Croix appeared to be crawling through the air a foot off the ground - that broke the immersion for me, totally. I'm sure the fan patches have fixed this by now, but imo endings only have that one shot to really impress you.

On paper the endings are fantastic to be fair, esp loved the Jack twist.

No wonder, IIRC, the apocalypse happens shortly after in the Vampire universe.
what you tookin' aboot?

spoiler in black:
the whole apocalypse thing is just a setup? the cask is empty, it was a real king from godknowswhen which Jack removed and replaced with C4 explosive to kill Lacroix, who would certainly be drawn to it due to the promise of power. it is all a setup. no apocalypse is truly seen in V:tM-B.

or do you mean in the white wolf books?

In the White Wolf universe. Gehenna starts almost immediately after Bloodlines.

Bloodlines is the official prequel to White Wolf, Inc.'s Time of Judgment expansion/storyline for its Vampire: The Masquerade role-playing game and therefore is considered canon.

Time of Judgment describes the end of the world.

okidoki. i thought the thinblood/gehenna crap was just to set the mood.

what happens in this Time of Judgement? those old scabby bastards rise from their grave and drink their minions dry as foretold? :)

Check this out.

Damn. I'd kill for another game in the World of Darkness or New World of Darkness universe (provided it's as awesome as Bloodlines).
