Virtual reality in gaming

It's an interesting concept, but way overhyped and gimmicky. It'll be interesting to see where it's at in a few years, but with current technology I'm doubtful it'll be much more than a gimmick for a good while. I can see it going somewhere when the really big companies start creating content, but that would probably also be a major blow to gaming in general. If it actually takes of and companies like Bethesda, Ubisoft, EA etc start cramming out VR-focused titles, today's standards of streamlining and railroading will seem pitiful in comparison.

Just look at how 3D has affected cinema. Sure, some cool things are being done but on the whole, blockbuster fantasy, sci-fi and action movies are more concerned about looking awesome in 3D than being actual good movies.

Doesn't interest me much either way. I like the idea of something like Skyrim (well, an actual good game, but you get what I mean) or a space flight simulator in VR. But it would have to look really real, and still be an actual good gameplay experience - good controls, actual content, something I could still sit in front of my pc or on the couch to play. But then again I easily get motion sick. So yeah.

PS: That Giantbomb stream pretty much sums up exactly what I've been expecting all along.
