Ihad dropped by today to remind us of an important date:
January 27, 1987: Wasteland is programmed at Interplay Productions under the leadership of Alan Pavlish. It is distributed by Electronic Arts for the Apple ][ platform. According to the Interplay programmers, the game shipped on January 27, A.D. 1987, “or thereabouts.” Wasteland is also released for the Commodore 64 platform.

1988: Wasteland is ported to the IBM platform by Michael Quarles in A.D. 1988.
Wasteland becomes the number one best-seller of the year.

And you know what? “Wasteland” is still fun to play!

how come I missed that title? aarr.. perhaps my father kept the game all for himself..

What an awesome game. Thanks for reminding us old farts about the best waste of time on the C64 ever.

I though we all got our holiday when Interplay decided not to make fallout 3.

When's Fallout day, Silencer?
Release Date: Sep 30, 1997.
Cool, that's the day after my Brother's birthday. Now, I don't really like the guy, so I can pretend to be celebrating his birthday.

Which will work until the point where I (drunkenly) shout "Happy Fallout Day!"

Damn...to think I have Wasteland savegames almost older than most of the newbie trash that comes in and tries to claim that they have played Fallout since it was released (making them 10 or 11 at the time), have been waiting for a new Fallout game for a decade, and then tries to get people to work on his mod that would be worse than removing the alien invasion from Wasteland. ;)

original wasteland box art

Here are some scans from the original box for wasteland for the apple II. Note that the cover picture is larger and that there is also an inside picture (this picture is also on the newer box but smaller and cut off more). The pictures on the back of this box are totally different than the smaller box, though.

It's funny, when I was scanning these in a few months ago I also found my original postcard mailed to me telling me when the wasteland hint book came out. The postcard was dated June 21, 1988. This hintbook was different in that is was told as a narrative story from the perspective of one of the player characters in the game rather than just a straight dry walkthrough. I even found my receipt when I bought it early in 1988 at a computer swap meet! :-)
