Wasteland 2 Update #37: Map, Beta and Rewards

I am still a little skeptical about the map thing. Probably because I like to have as less menu screens as possible. Even in Fallout I never used the Automap (well ok, it didn't really had any use anyway). Now, especially when you are on the world*map* then you already are on a overview map.

From a technical point of view I can understand the use (probably easier to realize world travel that way?) but gameplay-wise... Dunno.

The 2d map is a map. You use it like a map. (how often does that happen in a game these days? DayZ comes to mind, thats it.) Possibly (likely) you also use it to fast-travel(ish) to already visited locations.

The 3d "map" is not a map. It's the visual representation of your party exploring the wasteland. You get to see more of your immediate surroundings, so you can discover points of interest or oasis. I think it's a great implementation of an extra gameplay element, especially with the whole survival system in the mix.

All elements of the map can be present in the "visual representation of your exploring party" without problems.

Whoa! Is this going to be like in Krater? Oh gawd tell me it isn't! Krater's discription matches this (vice versa) and in that game you just traverse the wasteland (party represented by an arrow pointing the ground) until you trigger a random encounter or a settlement. If you enter either, the game world would show up. Basicly it is FO with the world map replaced with a much more eye candy and impossibly beautiful 3D representation of the surroundings. Anyway, that doesn't feel like exploring. Even with limited exploration, Titan Quest nailed it IMO. Map and the game world, both are amazing. Too bad good studios are dropping like flies..

Well, at least it's better exploration than filling empty arrows that shown with compass and quest marker.

as for party based 3d isometric game, I think it's best choice for map scale and exploring. NWN2:SoZ was great game for exploration except for long loading which came from flaw of engine.

The 2d map is FoW'd because they didn't want to spoil the locations.

@Josh Moody We "fog of war"-ed it so that we could avoid spoilers for our backers.

The collector's edition box includes a physical map. Are they going to FoW that too somehow? If so, that is some super advanced technology. :p

My point being, it would be neat if the physical map were a representation of the actual map handed down from ranger to ranger, etc.

The FoW only applies to this release and (probably) the beta. Jaysus.

and actually, the system of WL2 is similar to Fo1,2 and games I metioned are affected with Fallout 1,2 so has similar system.
